TurnToDust86 seeing as you like The Darkness, did you ever listen to the Stone Gods album? When The Darkness split up the drummer, guitarist and their second album album bass player formed The Stone Gods. They only released one album and I believe had a second in the can ready to release before The Darkness surprisingly reformed. I'd heard of them but never really checked them out. Just listened to those tracks and I really enjoyed them. Obviously there is some Darkness flavor in there but the singer definitely gives them a different sound. Might have to pick up that CD. Silver Spoons & Broken Bones was the album title. It was my favourite album of 2008 - can't believe its that long ago already. I actually discovered them when I went to see Airbourne live, (who were terrible btw), and Stone Gods were supporting them. Stone Gods were also on the bill with Def Leppard at Download in 2009 too, I think they were the first band on. I suppose its no surprise that once the possibility of The Darkness reforming reared its head that they jumped ship. Incidentally the vocalist for Stone Gods, (who also played guitar in the band), actually replaced Frankie on bass in The Darkness for the tour behind their second album One Way Ticket. So he was left very much high n dry when the orignal Darkness line up reformed.

$20.00 is the cheapest price for the Stone Gods album on Amazon... Haven't checked eBay but it's gonna have to wait, haha.
After giving The Darkness' new album a few 'spins' (can I still say that talking about my iPod?) and enjoying it, I'm switching gears. Normally I play an album a bunch of times when I get it but one can only handle so much of Justin Hawkins at a time.
Started working my way through Aerosmith's discography a couple of days ago since I'm seeing them in less than three weeks. I haven't listened to them in quite awhile so it's very refreshing coming back to their albums. Their first four are so good, especially Toys In The Attic and Rocks. Of course things go downhill from there, but there are still a lot of songs to enjoy from Draw The Line, Night In The Ruts, and even Rock In A Hard Place. It was hardest to get through that and Done With Mirrors, and now I'm listening to Permanent Vacation. I can only imagine what kind of shock this must have been to old school Aerosmith fans at the time.
I think they peaked in the comeback era with Pump and went too far in the overproduced, pop stuff on Get A Grip. Lots of fillers on that album IMO, and I'm forever sick of the three big ballads on that album.

They are a band I want to try some different stuff from, where to start though? At the beginning? Pump? In terms of studio albums, I'd recommend Get Your Wings, Toys In The Attic, Rocks, and Pump. If you enjoy the 80's stuff, Permanent Vacation is a good one to check out too, as all of those albums have some great album cuts in addition to the well known hits. Those are their most consistent albums IMO. Nine Lives (from 1997) is another favorite of mine, even just for "Taste Of India." When you hear that one, you'll probably realize why I like it so much considering what my all time favorite song is. Their debut is another one I really like, but they hadn't really captured 'their' sound yet and it's very blues-rock style. Pretty much every other album is hit and miss... Draw The Line is when you could tell the drugs were starting to interfere. Production is poor, songs aren't as strong (outside of the title track & "Kings And Queens"). Night In The Ruts has a few good tracks (especially "No Surprize") but too many covers, as Joe Perry left halfway through recording it and they could barely manage to write enough songs. Rock In A Hard Place is a pass since it doesn't feature Joe Perry at all and Brad Whitford only plays on "Lightning Strikes" (the best song on the album). Done With Mirrors was supposed to be their big comeback album with the original lineup intact, but it's average at best. "Let The Music Do The Talking" is really the only track I'd recommend from it. Skipping ahead to the 90's, Get A Grip was a big seller but has way too many filler tracks IMO. "Eat The Rich" and "Fever" are all I'd recommend outside of the singles. Onto the 2000's, Just Push Play is way overproduced with way too much ProTools. But that doesn't mean it doesn't include some great songs, as "Beyond Beautiful" and "Sunshine" are among my favorite songs of theirs and this was the album that got me into the band, oddly enough. The covers album, Honkin On Bobo, has a few strong tunes and honestly I probably listen to songs from this more than I do from DL's Yeah album. If you're peaking at songs on iTunes, I'd sample "Road Runner," "Shame Shame Shame," and "Baby, Please Don't Go." Or if you want to start with a compilation of album cuts, you can check out Gems, as it picks out some of the album cuts from the early era.

New Muse album, first 2 tracks are crackers, by the end it's sub-Lulu ('Tallica - Lou Reed collab)! Still have tickets to see them later this year, people tell me they do a good show.

So this post made me listen to a good amount of Aerosmith for the first time in awhile...lol. My interest in them has gone back and forth over the years but I've really enjoyed a lot of their stuff - first got into them a little after I got into Lep with the Pump era (although I didn't buy an album until Get A Grip). Now after going back to their older stuff there's a lot to like there as well - Seasons of Wither is my all time favorite Aero song. I also think Taste Of India and Turn To Dust are pretty synonymous - has to be the intro (among other things). I've always thought I've liked Nine Lives more than I should as although there's a good deal of filler, songs like Taste Of India and the back third of the album make it a very good album to revisit. I'll also throw in that a chunk of their latest album Songs From Another Dimension is very good. Luv XXX, Oh Yeah, Beautiful, Out Go The Lights, Legendary Child and Street Jesus in particular are really good songs IMO. If you listen to those andylgr you can also find out where Curt's quote on his avatar came from.

TurnToDust86 cheers for the recommendations. I own the latest album and there are some good tracks I it, I really liked legendary child. I used to have nine lives, but taste of India and falling in love were the only 2 songs I liked so I got rid of it. Taste of India is a fantastic song! I ordered pump and permanent vacation today. DesertSun81 I always assumed curts line came from Vince Neil's Sister of Pain song

DesertSun81 I always assumed curts line came from Vince Neil's Sister of Pain song Good place to start. Highlights for me from PV & Pump aside from the singles are Heart's Done Time, Magic Touch, Hangman Jury, and I'm Down (even though I'm not much of a Beatles fan, I can appreciate covers) and Young Lust, F.I.N.E., Monkey On My Back, and Voodoo Medicine Man. Nine Lives does have its share of filler tracks but I love the title track, FIL, Taste Of India, Something's Gotta Give, and the weirdness of Ain't That A *Edited by Admin* and The Farm. The new album has too many filler, tracks, especially in the latter portion of the album. But I really love Oh Yeah, Beautiful, Out Go The Lights, Legendary Child, and Street Jesus. I can't say I've ever heard a Vince Neil solo song.

Its just been confirmed that The Darkness are doing a 'secret' (thats not so secret now) set at Download this Sunday. This may well persuade me to get a ticket, as I would only have been going to see Kiss, Crue, HEAT and Slash as the line up stands now. Edit: Just bought my ticket

I loved Red Dragon Cartels album from a couple of years ago. But after their singer left earlier this year it's turned into a revolving door..... www.blabbermouth.net/news/jake-e-lees-red-dragon-cartel-recruits-canadian-singer-paul-death/RED DRAGON CARTEL, the band led by former OZZY OSBOURNE and BADLANDS guitarist Jake E. Lee, has recruited Canadian singer Paul D'Eath (CITIZENS UNITE, MUSHROOM TRAIL) to front the group for its upcoming shows. Video footage of the D'Eath performing with RED DRAGON CARTEL on June 5 in Janesville, Wisconsin can be seen below.
RED DRAGON CARTEL's last singer, Chas West (Jason Bonham, LYNCH MOB, 3 LEGGED DOGG), made his live debut with the band in Portland, Oregon on May 1 — only days after Michael Beck played his last show with the band on April 26 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Beck made headlines in April when he sang the lyrics to Osbourne's "Now You See It (Now You Don't)" while the rest of RED DRAGON CARTEL played "The Ultimate Sin" at their first show together in Miami, Florida. Beck later blamed the mixup on the fact that he "had no monitors at all" and he "couldn't hear anything."
RED DRAGON CARTEL in March announced the departure of singer Darren James Smith, who handled lead vocals on the band's self-titled debut album. The group also parted ways with bassist Greg Chaisson, who exited RED DRAGON CARTEL because he could "no longer take any more time away from [his] regular job."
Chaisson's replacement in RED DRAGON CARTEL is Anthony Esposito, who has previously played with Ace Frehley.
RED DRAGON CARTEL's debut CD sold around 5,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 69 on The Billboard 200 chart.
RED DRAGON CARTEL's setlist includes new material like the singles "Feeder" and "Deceived", as well as major hits from Jake E. Lee's glorious past: "Bark At The Moon", "The Ultimate Sin" and "Rock 'N' Roll Rebel" (all originally recorded by OZZY OSBOURNE), as well as "Shine On" and "High Wire" (BADLANDS).

Aerosmith will release their Download live movie on DVD in September.
It was shot during their 19-song headline appearance in 2014 and later shown in cinemas across the world.
Guitarist Brad Whitford said earlier this year: “You’re hearing it exactly as it happened. Nothing has been fixed or repaired – just sonically enhanced.”
Bassist Tom Hamilton added: “The band was so tight that night. We could relax and have fun and get off on the insane crowd.”
And he recalled the unique smell of the show, saying: “Every time we’ve been there it’s been the funkiest, most earthy audience on the tour. Usually the crowd’s been there a few days. The audience gets a distinct aroma. It’s great – it smells like being on a farm.”
Aerosmith Rocks Donington 2014 arrives via Eagle Rock on September 4. Guitarist Joe Perry this week said the band had learned lessons from 2012 album Music From Another Dimension, and he was hoping to make a follow-up. This year’s Download festival kicks off today (June 12) featuring headline appearances by Kiss, Slipknot and Muse.

Saw Kiss for the first time ever yesterday at Download. Setlist was:
Detroit Rock City Deuce Psycho Circus Creatures of the Night I Love It Loud War Machine Do You Love Me Hell or Hallelujah Calling Dr. Love Lick It Up God of Thunder Cold Gin Love Gun Black Diamond ------------ Shout It Out Loud I Was Made for Lovin' You Rock and Roll All Nite
I went in there with the pre-conceived notion that they'd be poor, but I have to say that I really enjoyed them.
Sure they have some dodgy vocals at times, yes they seem like a parody of themselves at times and yes its clearly a well oiled and choreographed machine.......... But theres no denying its a great spectacle, but more than anything I was surprised that they do sound musically good live.
They said yesterday had the biggest attendance of the 3 day festival with 85,000 there. I looked back and the crowd seemed to stretch to the top of the hill so a lot had turned out for Kiss. It started off a bit Spinal Tap as the curtain couldn't be raised high enough due to the wind, so when the drum riser went up before the opening track you could see the drummer above the curtain. Gene didn't fly, they had some problem with his harness, he didn't look pleased.
Overall the setlist seemed good to me. I liked hearing Creatures of the Night, I didn't think that would be played. I'd have added Crazy Nights and probably Unholy from Revenge to the set, just to add some more from the 80's & 90's, but thats a minor gripe. Oh and the addition of Won't get Fooled Again during Lick it Up was awful.
As for the show itself everything was there, from lots of fireworks on stage, flames, videos screens behind and above the stage, risers that go up and out over the crowd, blood, ticker tape, a firework show at the end, Paul on a separate small stage with its own little firework display and I'm sure I saw a kitchen sink too.

Did you get the chance to check out H.e.a.t? Your thoughts on Kiss pretty much echoed my thoughts seeing them last summer. Wasn't that enthused about seeing them but enjoyed the spectacle and they did sound pretty good. They probably could've played just about anything and it wouldn't have mattered...I just wanted to see fire and stunts like some big-budget action movie Saw Kiss for the first time ever yesterday at Download. tsmith I didn't get to see HEAT, which I was disappointed about. Due to the new cashless system at the festival it meant everyone had a wrist band which you preloaded cash on to using an app or the internet, so it added ages to the time to get in whilst they synced it with your ticket. Consequently I missed 2 bands. There were big queues to get in and people weren't happy,

Caught The Darkness at Download this weekend gone. They were announced last week as a 'secret act' to play in one of the big tents at the festival. The place was packed for them. I just about managed to get under the tent, which I'm guessing holds around 2000 people, and there were many more people outside and on the periphery of the tent to see them.
They went down really well. They played 3 new ones which I thought sounded really good, (it helps they are my favs from the album too), but the majority of the set came from their first album. They played nothing from Hot Cakes. The intro for Barbarian was extended by quite a bit, turns out that Justin was making his entrance being carried through the crowds on Viking shields, which I couldn't see properly as I was on the other side. Easily one of the bands of the day for me.
Setlist:
Barbarian Growing on me Mudslide Get your hands off my woman One way ticket Love is only a feeling Black shuck Open fire I believe in a thing called love

I saw Foo Fighters in Oslo last wednesday. The gig before Grohl broke his foot. I gotta admit i wasnt the biggest Foo Fighters fan before the show. But i was blown away but the sheer energy the band and Dave has. He has to be one of the last truly great frontmen in rnr...
So glad i went and discovered how great they are live...

Its funny that over the last 6 or 7 years that I've been going to Download I've probably seen more of Alter Bridge members in their various bands. I've seen Alter Bridge twice, Slash with Myles twice and then this weekend I saw Tremonti. I was really surprised at how heavy his music is. I enjoyed his set and hes clearly a very talented guy.

New iron maiden album out Sept 4th called the book of souls!! Very happy and wonder if they will be touring around that time as leppard? www.ironmaiden.com/new-iron-maiden-studio-album-the-book-of-souls.htmlThe stunning cover art was created by Mark Wilkinson, who has worked with the band previously, and because this 11-track album has a total running time of 92 minutes, it is IRON MAIDEN’s first ever double studio album. There’s a broader split on the songwriting compared to previous Maiden records, with bassist and founder member Steve Harris contributing to seven of the tracks; 6 of them with Maiden’s guitarists and one sole composition. This is also the first time since 1984’s Powerslave that an IRON MAIDEN studio album also features two tracks written solely by Bruce Dickinson, one of which is the longest song Maiden has ever recorded! And also two Dickinson/Smith collaborations.
Steve comments,
“We approached this album in a different way to how we’ve recorded previously. A lot of the songs were actually written while we were there in the studio and we rehearsed and recorded them straight away while they were still fresh, and I think that immediacy really shows in the songs, they have almost a live feel to them, I think. I’m very proud of The Book Of Souls, we all are, and we can’t wait for our fans to hear it, and especially to take it out on the road next year!”
Bruce continues,
“We’re really excited about The Book Of Souls and had a fantastic time creating it. We started working on the album in late summer 2014 and recorded it at Guillame Tell Studios in Paris, where we’d done the Brave New World album back in 2000 so the studio holds special memories for all of us. We were delighted to discover the same magical vibe is still alive and very much kicking there! So we immediately felt at home and the ideas just started flowing. By the time we’d finished we all agreed that each track was such an integral part of the whole body of work that if it needed to be a double album, then double its going to be!”
The full tracklisting is:
Disc 1 1. If Eternity Should Fail (Dickinson) 8:28 2. Speed Of Light (Smith/ Dickinson) 5:01 3. The Great Unknown (Smith/ Harris) 6:37 4. The Red And The Black (Harris) 13:33 5. When The River Runs Deep (Smith/ Harris) 5:52 6. The Book Of Souls (Gers/ Harris) 10:27
Disc 2 7. Death Or Glory (Smith/ Dickinson) 5:13 8. Shadows Of The Valley (Gers/ Harris) 7:32 9. Tears Of A Clown (Smith/ Harris) 4:59 10. The Man Of Sorrows (Murray/ Harris) 6:28 11. Empire Of The Clouds (Dickinson) 18:01
Formats: 2CD deluxe hardbound book limited edition 2CD standard edition Triple heavyweight black vinyl High res audio (24-bit Mastered for ITunes and non-Mastered for iTunes) Standard res audio (16 bit/ 44.1 kHz)
The Book Of Souls is the band’s 16th studio album since their eponymous debut in 1980 charted at #4 in the UK, in a career achieving sales of over 90 million albums worldwide. Their previous album, 2010’s The Final Frontier was Maiden’s most successful chart-wise to date, reaching Number One in 28 countries and was their highest chart debut in the U.S reaching #4 in the Billboard 200.
Due to Bruce’s illness the band had to delay touring plans but promise to be out on the road again early next year, giving time for Bruce to make a full physical recovery to be ready for the rigours of Maiden live performances.

Love the album cover, Maiden have the best t-shirts in the biz, looking foward to buying the CD and many tour t-shirts! 3 songs over 10 minutes, including an 18 minute song! LOL. That's for tomorrow to comment on, Final Frontier rocking out now!
Summer 2016 is Maiden for me. Scream for me ...

I'm looking forward to it and I hope this is a good one, I was really disappointed with their last 2 albums.
When I got in to Maiden back in the 80's they had the formula of great singles that would get you hooked, they'd have an album epic and then some quality album tracks. I think they've almost become like a prog band with their lyrics these days and they've lost that immediacy of hook laden singles too. Couple that with making the all songs too long and it seems to have made them sound samey and I've struggled to get into the last 2.
But whilst Book of Souls has some very very long songs I hope they mix up the song styles.

I only liked Benjamin Breeg from AMOLAD. So glad I skipped that tour when I learnt they were playing the album in this entirity. TurnToDust86 Pump and Permanent Vacation have been on and off in the car this last couple of weeks. I think I prefer Pump and I don't know why I never bought it back in the day. I loved the singles at the time and that's right when I had just started buying albums and getting in to rock music and more bands other than Leppard.

Back in 2013 Whitesnake released 2 live albums from the Forevermore tour, yes 2. The first one, Made in Japan, was recorded appropriately enough in Japan and featured a show on cd, the soundcheck on cd and a dvd of the show. A really great package.
The second called Made in Britain featured one cd recorded on the UK tour and a second cd recorded from around the rest of the world. I never got round to picking up the Britian album until I saw it last week at an international record stall at the Dowload festival. Sure theres some cross over with some of the tracks featured on disc 1 of the Made in Japan release, but overall its different enough and its a really great document of the entire tour. You can't fault WS with the stop gap releases they've been putting out between studio albums over the last 10 years.
