I don’t know why anyone would be unhappy with this release. Demo versions and a lost track 40+ years after the fact. And in multiple versions…good times to celebrate the greatest rock record of all time!! 😁

I for one am excited about this release. Love the rough mix. Hearing things I haven’t heard before.
Hoping they have some tricks up their sleeves for #Hysteria40 - especially the scrapped Steinman tracks or the demos heard on Classic Albums.

We have the tracklist and a single: How’s everyone feeling about Pyromania 40 so far? Some thoughts from my vantage point.
1. Very happy with how deep they’ve been digging. 53 tracks. Demos, rough mixes, two live shows and alternative listens of the album with some pretty good ears in Giles Martin. For a band so methodical in presenting the audio they feel should be in circulation, this is a fairly generous helping for a 10-track album with no b-sides. The presentation seems solid and their inner booklets have been of high quality. Good collector value for the price.
2. The 11th song. I always feel a bit weird about “uncovered” songs from the archive. If it’s untouched, we hear a young band in 1982 trying to get a track together but it didn’t cross the highbar and/or was stripped for hooks and riffs (maybe “Die Hard The Hunter?) That’s part of the process of making a great album. It’s fascinating to hear those tough decisions and a testament to their work ethic, at least to my ears as a musician. Good examples of this are the untouched tracks from U2’s “Unforgettable Fire” and “Achtung Baby” anniversary releases.
It’s hard to describe, but it spoils the fun when bands revisit archive material and feel compelled to finish it. U2 and the Stones did dabble in this, as have Leppard themselves (“All On Your Touch”). It works when the material is fairly recent (“Retro Active”) not so much when it’s been too long. Musicians are humans. It’s fair, even honorable, to admit they aren’t the hungry upstarts they were 42 years ago when crafting this album. Their decisions would have been more prideful, wild and radical than a band now interested in protecting a legacy. So it dulls the shine a bit when the latest theory is Phil was recording new guitar tracks for this song while on the road. Will there be new vocals, too? That young fire is even harder to bottle. All will be revealed when “No You Can’t Do That” is finally streaming.
3. Let’s keep our expectations in check for the demos and rough mixes. As a longtime fan and fellow crafter of sound, I’m certain to love the multiple demos and rough mixes on disc two. But let’s be honest, we’re not going to hear a treasure trove of unreleased gems, solos, riffs and alternate takes. We’ve heard live works-in-progress of some of this album’s riffs and songs (“Medicine Man,” “This Ship Sails Tonight”) and I’ll be pleasantly surprised if these demos are something beyond embryonic hooks later heard on the album. What I do expect are riff tapes and run throughs with maybe an occasional unused detour for a few bars. Something Mutt suggested they trim or cut. But entire songs that were demoed and unused? Doubtful, but they’ve surprised me before.
Once they got to Battery Studios, their working method was reportedly methodical. Elements that were deemed inferior were often erased on the master tape and replaced. This was a team that knew what they were after, not Bowie in Berlin, where a singer or guitarist lays down four takes of a part and the master tape hides some unused parts. Moments like Mutt’s unused backing vocals on Hysteria’s Classic Albums documentary are probably going to be rare. These rough mixes will probably sound like what they are: Evidence of a week’s work that was given to Peter and Cliff to chart progress along the way. So like the “Photograph” rough mix, I expect to hear some missing bits, some instruments sounding raw and placed differently in stereo spectrum. I don’t hope for a long lost Pete Willis solo or unused Steve Clark riff to be revealed for the first time in a mix. But, I’ve been surprised before!
4. I’m jazzed by the Giles Martin mix. These boys have gotten some top shelf talent to review their master tapes in recent years and that’s exciting and validating as a fan. They’re joining the upper echelon of acts worthy of this attention.
5. Seeing Los Angeles there was a not a surprise, but Dortmund included is both awesome and frustrating. We get six tracks if memory serves, and only the audio. Perhaps they didn’t have physical distribution rights to the video of that concert, perhaps these were the only tracks that were recorded or still exist on tape. But I would have preferred seeing the complete show on blu-ray. There’s always YouTube, but that’s a shortcoming.
As for the much ballyhooed video of San Diego taken by Denise Dakin, an interesting curio, but is it of good enough quality to include an official release? Not quite sure, certainly not for its audio of the show. Same goes for the bootleg video of Montreal. But the six filmed songs from Paris? Or the high-quality broadcast from Seattle? There’s more from the ‘83 tour, but again, ownership and even band satisfaction of the performance is always an unknown factor.
So there you have it! Excitement overall, but some missed opportunities that, frankly, are probably outside the band’s control. We’ll see what finally emerges in April when the box set drops. Stay tuned.

I'm happy to hear the demos, but I'm a much bigger fan of live stuff. What kind of live stuff would you have wanted from this era? Any other live sets from the tour, particularly the February-March European run where the set was a bit different (Lady Strange, Rocks Off, Overture).

You would think that Def Leppard would have recorded a bunch of shows throughout their career. No High N Dry soundboard has come forth. And with Pyro being a huge album you would think that shows would have been recorded just so they could listen to them at some point.

I’m sure there’s mention in Animal Instinct of them specifically setting up to record the Oxford 1980 show. The Rolling Stones mobile was always something that was mentioned when bands wanted to record a gig, almost like it had to be booked way in advance.

Now I finally understand why the track listing on the LP makes no sense!

Pretty disappointing it's not an complete song. Although, I guess if it were complete with lyrics they probably would've used it somewhere else before now. Might still be interesting to hear the music/riffs to see if maybe it turned into the basis for some other song. 😳No Lyrics for No you can’t do that !!?? Dang it. My signed vinyl is on it's way. It looks like it's coming by boat! I imagine the CD/DVD set will ship soon too. Although I guess early May sometime is when I'll see it.
