Kid Rock - Feb 2 (Not a big fan of his, however, I bought tickets for my friend since her birthday is at the end of the month and I'm wearing my new Iron Maiden shirt that I just bought! And we are going to be eating at our favorite mexican restaurant beforehand) U2 - May 2 Def Leppard/Journey - July 9
I would like to see Justin Timberlake on May 5. Not sure if I can swing it since I work a second part time retail job. Another concert I want to see is L.A. Guns in April. Would also love to see Def Lep more than once this tour.

Saw Geoff Tate last night at a small venue called the Tivoli in Buckley, Wales. This year is the 30th anniversary of Operation Mindcrime, which IMO is one of the greatest rock albums ever recorded, its one of the few albums where I like every track. One of the conditions of his acrimonious split from Queensryche is that only Geoff Tate can play it in its entirity and thats exactly what hes been doing on his UK tour. I didn't even know he was touring til last week, so this was the final show on the tour and I'm so pleased I went as I may never get the chance to hear this album done live again. I must admit to having reservations beforehand about what his band would be like and how his voice is these days. I last saw him perform live in 1994 (Valentines Day in fact and my mrs still reminds me to this day that I went to a concert with my mates on that day). I thought his voice was still very good and he did the songs justice and in addtition his band were excellent too, really tight, and quite an eclectic bunch with a Canadian, 2 Glaswegians, a Brazillian and a guy from Sheffield making up the band. How he got that group together I don't know, but they were good. In addition to the 2 main guitarists one of the band handled keyboards and added extra rythym guitars too so the sound was really full. Its also a heavily sampled show that runs to the albums many spoken word, orchestral cues and audio effects and it worked perfectly. The downside of seeing this performed in full in such a small place is that there are no video effects to go with it, but that was a minor gripe. Geoff Tates daughter took the vocals of Mary on the albums centre piece, Suite Sister Mary, shes got a good voice but not as strong as the original. Mindcrime made up the main set and to finish the show they came back and played the 4 big singles from Empire as the encore. They were really good and I hope he does come back to the UK at some point.
I mentioned this was the last show on the tour and in fact it was the last show of 11 consecutive UK gigs without a break, amazing. I was talking with the guy I went with and we both agreed its a real pity that an album this good and iconic is being played in such small venues that hold only a few hundred. Inside I felt a disappointed for Tate, because I feel it deserves a bigger audience than it got, there must have only been about 150 in for the show. However you wouldn't have known it from the bands performance, they all looked to be enjoying themselves and clearly they aren't do these shows to earn a fortune. In fact it was a close knit affair, with Tates daughter on the merch stand, she also sang in the support act and appeared as Mary later in the show. One of his guitarists and the bass player both played in the support band too and his drummer was also on the merch stand at some point too.
If you get the chance to go and see this show, take it, they did an excellent job of a classic album.

Going to have a great May coming.... Melodic Rock Fest in Chicago seeing H.e.a.t, Crazy Lixx, Treat, Station, Midnite City and FM among others. Then Leppard in Buffalo at the end of May. That's pretty much blowing my whole concert budget out of the water for the year

Geoff Tate is a great vocalist, and I'm fine with how his voice changed in later years, but it is disappointing how the band felt they had to move on from him. We'll probably never get to see this album played live by the original line up, or one close to it, ever again. I saw the band Queensryche year before last in Sheffield and they played a great set. The new albums are ok, but they do miss his voice.
