Oh yes just been watching Aces High, the stage is unbelievable! No spoilers!
Yes, Icarus and Where Eagles Dare in the set is brilliant. Cannot wait to see them in late July, Maiden deliver.

Went to the Download Festival yesterday. Guns n roses headlined and did a 3 hour set. Setlist was:
It's So Easy Mr. Brownstone Chinese Democracy Welcome to the Jungle Double Talkin' Jive Better Estranged Live and Let Die Slither Rocket Queen You Could Be Mine Attitude This I Love Shadow of Your Love Civil War Slash Guitar Solo Speak Softly Love (Love Theme From The Godfather) Sweet Child O' Mine
Coma Wichita Lineman Wish You Were Here November Rain
Black Hole Sun
Knockin' on Heaven's Door Nightrain —————
Patience The Seeker Paradise City
After seeing them in 2006 when it was just Axl I swore I’d never go to see them again. Well yesterday was definitely the last time I’m going to see them and I wish I still just had the memories of the 2 great Wembley Stadium gigs of 1991 & 1992 to go out on.
Last night turned in to one of the most self indulgent shows I’ve ever been to see in my life.
Look at the setlist, look at the amount of covers they did. I count 10. Fair enough they’ve made Live and Let Die and Knockin on Heavens Door their own. I can understand them playing Shadow of your Love and Slither, (Axl murdered Slither, give me Scott any day on vocals). But Wichita Lineman! Black Hole Sun? The Seeker (to be fair it suited Axls vocal). Wish you were Here?? (I wish you’d play one of your own songs more like).
There was a point in the set when they visibly lost the crowd. People were walking out or talking amongst themselves. It almost happened after Civil War, but Sweet Child O Mine rescued it. But the tipping point IMO was from Coma to Nighttrain. Coma is a great song, I love it but it’s not a festival song, because of its running time (more on that later). November Rain was a bright spot in that final run of songs, but as with many others they tack on an intro from something else, I think they played the Layla outro before November Rain. Just why?
They played 3 hours, sounds like an epic event right? Unless you don’t want to hear countless covers and little bits of other songs used as intros to the headline bands songs. But in addition they also extended too many songs. Rocket Queen is a great song! But they extended the intro and solo to take it over ten minutes. Double Talkin Jive, quite a short album track is extended in its intro and outro to more than double its length. November Rain is already a long song before you tack on something else to intro it. Knockin on Heavens Door also has a long middle section added with a poor attempt at a singalong. So factor in the other long songs from Use Your Illusion in Coma, Estranged and Civil War and its no wonder it ran at 3 hours. It became too much.
I’d also say that GnR have never been able to pace a set either. This is more evidence of that, you don’t lose a crowd in the final 45 minutes like they did, especially considering the songs they have. In fact I would say they played a stadium set for a GnR fan to a festival full of casual fans. It doesn’t mix well. But they don’t care. Their attitude to the fans stinks, yeah they look cool, but theres no audience interaction to draw you in. Axl went off stage when he wasn’t involved. It ended up turning in to the Slash show, he is unbelievable and he carries the band these days. I hate to say that Axls voice has gone, he’s lost a certain range that affects a lot of songs. Some are no problem, but on many others he hasn’t got it. He sounds like Mickey Mouse and that’s really sad to see.
That show could have been so much better had there been some trimming of the song extensions and covers. A tight 2 hour set would have probably seen me writing a much more glowing review instead of feeling like I’d just spend over £100 watching a band play a show for themselves instead of for 80,000 people.

I saw GnR in Singapore 2 and a half hour set, except for Axl's Elton John type bits excellent. Agree setlist above loses a lot of energy towards the end.
Iron Maiden are full throttle for 105 minutes perfect length of set for me, can keep intensity going. maiden have the songs to do it.

I did Download too. Here is my mini review for anyone who cares:
Highlights: Black Stone Cherry and Shinedown. Both bands are at all time high in popularity in the UK and both were fantastic. In this Moment were pretty brilliant too.
Up and coming and fun: Temperance Movement and the Struts. Great sets and hoping the best for the future for these 2 UK acts
Fun and Dependable : Thunder and Wayward sons
OK: Inglorious, Von Hertzen Brothers, Powerflo, You and me at 6.
Well at least I saw them: Guns n Roses, Bullet for My valentine, Greta Van Fleet

Going to Poison and Cheap Trick in 2 weeks in Darien. Before you get on me too bad, I won the tickets from a local radio station. I picked up the tickets today and they're dead center, row 5 lol. Never expected that good of seats....figures that it's for a show I don't really care much about and winning tickets was probably the only way I'd go. It looks like there are a ton of tickets still available which is why I probably got such great seats. Poison is a band that really needs to be on a bill with a bigger band like Def Leppard. They're fine as an opening act but they aren't a headliner anymore IMO. I just don't feel like Cheap Trick and Pop Evil are enough to make it that intriguing of a bill. I'd have rather seen Poison, Tesla and somebody like Halestorm if they wanted a modern rock touch. Oh well....I do enjoy Poison though and the wife is happy being a Brett fan

Poison were great, Cheap Trick were actually pretty good, Pop Evil are horrible. Of note: I know many of you have seen shows in Tinley Park & last years DL show was about as packed as I have ever seen that place. Not so much for Poison. lol. Lawn was MAYBE 10% full & they were practically giving tickets away the week previous to the show.

Day tickets for GNR were £105 in total which was £20 more than day tickets for Friday and Sunday. I overheard one of the stewards saying they were expecting 15,000 day tickets holders on the Saturday. That in addition to all those that had already bought weekend tickets. The figures aren’t confirmed but estimates but Saturday around 100,000 people in attendance. So I really wouldn’t be surprised if GnR got a huge pay off to play there.

Throw in all the extra stuff like parking, beer, food, merchandise, there should be on average up to 100,000 people there over the weekend so I still imagine that Download is a very profitable gig. Copping has spoke about wanting to get bands like Van Halen, Foo Fighters, Zeppelin and Pearl Jam at the festival. To get the big acts there you have to pay and him booking GnR is a massive statement of intent on behalf of the festival.

I just saw Foreinger, Whitesnake and JBLZE Friday. It was really great! I was able to score front row just before the show for very reduced price.
I so wish one of these bands was touring with Def Leppard this year, but meanwhile it was a nice distraction while I await Fenway. :-)

Saw Mr Big last night in Shanghai fantastic classic rock show, pro's who know what they are doing.
Venue sold out in advance, about 1200 people attended, average age about 25, 95% local Shanghainese who all seemed to know the words. Tix priced at about US$105.
Given Lepps are a lot bigger than Mr Big they could easily do one of the slightly bigger 4,000 or 5,600 venues.

Agreed, I saw Mr Big two weeks ago in Sydney with Extreme, both bands are full of amazing musicians and both have a rock-solid collection of hits. Complete pros. Was a great night.

I saw Volbeat last Monday at Tivoli in Utrecht. Tivoli is a venue with a capacity of 2000 people. Great looking venue too! I was really looking forward seeing Volbeat but to be really honest I liked their support act Tremonti more. What a great band!! And what a talented singer/guitarist. Lucky for us we had tickets for Tremonti the next day in Zwolle 😀. Fantastic show as is their new album ‘A Dying Machine’. Next…. Myles Kennedy in Bochum (Germany) with full band. http://instagram.com/p/BkiUzk3AF7G http://instagram.com/p/BkpMTKogUmG

Dep Leppard tonight (obviously a tribute band)

Went to one of the UKs Leps tribute bands, Dep Leppard last night in Stoke on Trent UK.
Setlist:
Stagefright Let’s get rocked Women Hysteria Action Gods of War Animal Rocket Armageddon it Love Bites Make Love Like A Man Pour Some Sugar on Me Bringin on the Heartbreak Switch 625 Photograph ————— Rock of Ages Here I Go Again
It was my first time at this particular venue called Eleven. It’s fairly new and is converted from an old industrial unit. But the inside has obviously been refitted with brand new stage and FOH equipment and additional bar areas too. It only holds 350 so it’s a nice intimate size and from what I can gather mainly hosts tribute acts. However, looking at their upcoming gigs they’ve got Graham Bonnet, Blaze Bayley, Eric Martin and Geoff Tate all playing this venue. The sound was really good and I think is somewhere I’ll visit again. There were easily over 100 people in attendance for this Leps tribute, I was a bit concerned it would be virtually empty as I found once when another (now defunct) Lep tribute visited the area a few years ago.
I’ve seen these before and they’ve had 3 new band members since then (all the guitarists). The old “Steve” was much more authentic in his look and mannerisms, as was the old “Sav” too. Let’s be honest it’s impossible to match the real thing but these guys give it a good go and people seemed to enjoy them, they went down well with plenty of singing along. The band also seemed to be having a lot of fun as well. “Joe” struggles on some of the higher screaming stuff (Stagefright, ROA, Photograph) but the point of these gigs is to evoke the spirit of the band and their music. If they can get a soundalike then great, but usually that’s not always the case unless it’s an Elvis tribute act you’re going to see. Just makes you realise how good the real Joe actually is, even now at nearly 60.
I’ll explain the Whitesnake ending. This same band also do a Whitesnake tribute act too. Sometimes they split their shows half and half I think. To be honest I’d have preferred to hear a Leps song to close as it was billed as Leppard night, they said they’d ran out of Leppard songs and maybe it was a bit impromptu? Either way it went down well. Overall a good night in a venue that I must visit again, because these kind of places have all but died out in some areas.

Last Monday we drove from Holland to Bochum in Germany to see Myles Kennedy & Co (full band) with Tim Tournier on bass and Zia Uddin on drums. They performed at the Christuskirche what made it extra special because of the great acoustics. The voice of that man is magical IMO. The setlist was different from last March when I saw him in Amsterdam. He played 26 different songs at the two shows I attended, only 9 songs on both shows….very impressive! Highlight of the show #Love Can Only Heal”. It was over 30 degrees inside but I got goosebumps all over 🙏👌. Setlist: Devil on the Wall The Great Beyond Ghost of Shangri La Haunted by Design Standing in the Sun (Slash feat. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators cover) Turning Stones Addicted to Pain (Alter Bridge song) Blind Faith The Trooper (Iron Maiden cover) White Flag (The Mayfield Four cover) Songbird Watch Over You (Alter Bridge song) Travelling Riverside Blues (Robert Johnson cover) World on Fire (Slash feat. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators cover) Year of the Tiger Love Can Only Heal http://instagram.com/p/BlU5944gC2d

iron maiden were very good, fantastic staging. middle of set dipped a bit for me, wicker man and sign of the cross culprits. tremonti repeated same song nine times!
iced earth in berlin when they slowed things down were ok. about 300 attended.
my mate was told that iced earth were playing to crowds as small as 40. dan reed network in malmo only had 75.
touring is an expensive business. iced earth had a big tour bus outside and roadcrew so lord knows how they cover costs as few people buy recorded music.

Saw Iron Maiden last night at Manchester Arena. The place was sold out. What a gig. Easily the best visual Maiden show I've witnessed with all the props and different themed sets, but not only that it was the best sounding Maiden show I've seen too. In the past a lot of Maiden gigs I've been to have been quite muddy in the foh sound mix, not last night, it was crystal clear to me, with good defintition between everyone. In particulat Nicko who sounded much more powerful in the mix with I think a slightly different sound to his drums. Doing some digging and it looks like they've had a new sound engineer. On top of that Bruce is singing better now than he has for a long time, what a voice and his unbelievable energy is infectious, the guy is 60 today btw. In addition Steve Harris is like another frontman on stage. Overall they are fantastic musicians and are so tight. I'm going to go out on a limb and say they are the best active rock band out there right now on the live circuit.
I've said many times that seeing Maiden is a different experience to many other gigs I go to. I can't explain it but theres a real togetherness and tribal feel between the band and the crowd. The only other band I've felt like that with is at a Metallica show.
Setlist:
Aces high Where eagles dare 2 minutes to midnight The clansman The trooper Revelations For the greater good of god The wicker man Sign of the cross Flight of icarus Fear of the dark The number of the beast Iron maiden ----------- The evil that men do Hallowed be thy name Run to the hills
Within that setlist there were 6 songs I'd never witnessed live in person. Thats a big chunk of the set to be seeing for the first time. I knew the setlist prior to going in and I'd say that for me only For the greater good of God provided a lull in the set. I I even enjoyed Sign of the Cross, which beforehand I thought would be a Blaze song too many, but I'd never seen that live before. Overall I'd say the crowd were well in to everything except SOTC and FTGGOG, with everything else going down a storm. Highlights were Where Eagles Dare and Flight of Icarus.

agree with andys assessment, maiden bring a tribal feel to their gigs. i was on the trainfrom krakow airport to the centre of the city when i bumped into a maiden fan i had bumped into 3 previous times!
greater good, works on the album didnt work live for me.
still maiden hit the spot. great they played the trooper in belfast.
