Whole new bunch of listening recommendations, other than Leppard of course! Doro Pesch/Warlock= Iron Maiden but female with a ton more focus on love based songs. Metal nonetheless. Thunder= Currently on the Backstreet Symphony album, these guys rock! Jude Cole= Start the Car album from '92 at the moment. Singer-songwriter in the same vein as John Waite. Crying Mary from his self-titled album is a must listen. Roger Daltrey= Under a Raging Moon album, After the Fire is the best non-The Who track Pete Townshend has ever written. Whitesnake= Trouble album, along with the first four original Whitesnake tracks from the Snakebite EP. Just amazing. Down N' Outz= Last Man Standing is my favourite track from the new album and no one can convince me any different.

Every night at 7pm during shift change at the hospitals, people all over Vancouver open their windows and start clapping, screaming, banging on pots and pans, blowing train horns lol etc. They do this to honor all of the first responders and hospital staff who have been fighting this pandemic since day one.
We listen to it every night. Makes the City seem not so silent.
I'm sure all cities have something that brings them together.

Listening to Joe Satriani's new album "Shapeshifting" - and surprisingly really loving it.
And not because of guitar wizardry, there's some genuinely awesome melodic songs here. Real songs, just without vocals.

I've been mainly listening to a lot of Imagine Dragons lately, taking a bit of a break from Def Leppard for the time being. Starting to become a real big fan of the Evolve album and some of the songs off of Smoke+Mirrors. Guess I could consider this a experimental time for me since I've also been listening to a bunch of other genres than the typical melodic rock that I was never really a fan of. Have a good feeling that once these new live albums from Def Leppard drop I'll be listening to those for awhile, absolutely love the way Billy's Got a Gun sounds off of the album!

Slang - what else would I be listening to this week?

Also pulled this out to listen to this week. I've been digging into some older albums with the lack of new releases going on. Had Slang, Mechanical Resonance from Tesla, Dr. Feelgood from Motley Crue and Under Lock & Key from Dokken in my car this week. I know it's been said before but damn I just love that Slang album and it's amazing I find myself saying that after how much I disliked it when I first heard it because it wasn't what I wanted at the time. I really feel like that album was a bit ahead of it's time and it wouldn't sound that out of place if they released it today. Just a cool modernish melodic rock album and if they don't want to make a Hysteria type album, I wish they'd make another Slang type album. IMO they clearly have the ability as Wings Of An Angel is a song that wouldn't have been out of place on Slang IMO. I'd just like to see more of those types of tunes....sound great and think they also suit Joe's voice very well at this stage in his career. Slang - what else would I be listening to this week?

Slang - what else would I be listening to this week? Same. Currently playing through my now annual May 14 tradition of listening to the album and then the rough/demo playlist. 01. Truth? [Demo] 02. Turn To Dust [Phil Verse Vocal] 03. Raise Your Love 04. All I Want Is Everything [Demo] 05. Work It Out [1st Draft] 06. Breathe A Sigh [Rough Mix] 07. Anger 08. Black Train 09. Blood Runs Cold [Rough Mix] 10. Where Does Love Go When It Dies [1st Draft] 11. Pearl Of Euphoria [Rough Mix] 12. Move With Me Slowly [1st Draft/Phil Chorus Vocal] 13. All On Your Touch Listening to all of the rough mixes/etc usually makes me want to listen to the finished version again so I may do that this afternoon. And then some live stuff from the era.

Was reading an issue of Classic Rock celebrating the 40th anniversary of Back in Black so I thought I'd dig that album out and play it. There are some great songs on it with probably only a couple of fillers. I'd even say that the sound of the album hasn't really dated that much either. I then put the follow up on (For Those About to Rock) which is nowhere near as memorable even though the title track is arguably one of the best songs they've ever recorded.

Been in the car a lot this week and listened to a lot of HITS VEGAS Disc 1 (sounds damn good in the car too). Surprisingly this second album from One Desire has been still getting a lot of play time from me between spins of the Vegas discs...I thought I would've put it down once Leppard came out. Great album...a lot of melodic/adventurous guitar work with some great harmonies to add to it.

Listened to Euphoria and X back to back today. It’s quite jarring going from Euphoria into a “side 1” of X that’s very ballad heavy. But great production though, Vegas has also made me appreciate Let me be the One a lot more too.

Had the latest compilation from Whitesnake for fathers day, the Rock album. Which basically contains a bunch of songs from 84-the present day remastered and in some cased embellished. I approached this with some caution and cynicism, but they've done a great job on the tracks. Somehow (IMO) they've made them all sound like they were recorded pretty much within the same timeframe, just by tweaking the mix and changing the drum and bass guitar sound. They've done a really good job of it. On my first few listens I'd say that instead of trampling all over the originals they've given them a fresh coat of gloss if you like, it reminds me of Retro Active in that the change in drums and that consistency of their mix makes the album flow together nicely. One thing that always grated on me with Still of the Night is the fade out ending, they've fixed that and I love this new version. There are other subtle additions to songs like guitars and new keyboards, but I found it hard to discern whats been changed in that regard. Granted the drums take a bit of getting used to when you're used to originals, but I think this is well worth a listen. They've even dug out some great songs from 1997's Restless Heart album which flew right under the radar. In reading the liner notes it looks like they are very busy in working on doing the same to their entire back catalogue and this album (the first in a trilogy) is aimed at giving fans a taster of what they doing.

I’ve been without a decent turntable for a while now so I decided to pick up an old school early 90s hi-fi system that is very similar to what I had back then. I was lucky enough to pick one up for only £60 from someone who was clearing their parents house, it’s in perfect condition. So that meant I could get out my boxes of old 7” singles, some of which I haven’t played for over 30 years, especially the old Iron Maiden singles I was digging out of the boxes. I also got out some old albums as well, I was surprised to notice that the bonus tracks on the 84 re-release of High n Dry were at the end of side one and the start of side 2, meaning that there are 2 versions of BOTH very close to each other. I expected to see them at the end of the album like the cd.

Seeing as it was the anniversary of its release I listened to HnD on the way home yesterday, such a great album. Ten solid tracks and at only around 45 mins long (as most albums were back then) means that it doesn’t outstay its welcome.

Spinning the new Tokyo Motor Fist album "Lions" that's out today....Excellent stuff! Sounds like what you'd get if you tossed Danger Danger, Trixter and Def Leppard in a blender

The album release had great timing for me as I had a bunch of windshield time in front of me this weekend so I could really dig into it. These guys put out another awesome album. There are several great songs here, but the highlight for me without a doubt is MEAN IT...damn did they NAIL it with that one. Checks all the boxes if you're looking for an ANIMAL/PROMISES/DANGEROUS type thing - not only could it stand up with those (and I would not make that comparison lightly) but the production/attention to detail is so good it sounds like they called up Mutt Lange (which is a huge compliment for Steve Brown because I know he produced it). On a side note...why on earth was this not at least one of the first two singles!? YOUNGBLOOD is another GREAT song and a worthy first single, but while AROUND MIDNIGHT is a nice enough track, it's not even in the same league as MEAN IT for me. Other highlights for me are MONSTER IN ME (the intro riff is AWESOME and THAT pre-chorus! HUGE!), SEDONA (great jangly riff that channels Van Halen for me...also an AWESOME pre-chorus), and DREAM YOUR HEART OUT (has another great riff and some real substance to it with some great riffing by Steve and probably the album's best solo). It's such a treat to have a handful of other bands that not only channel Leppard but have forged their own identity in the process. Tokyo Motor Fist is definitely one of the best out there and I went back and re-listened to the first album this weekend as well...forgot how good it is. It's also interesting to read Steve Brown's interview comments recently as well about not only is he in the background of the Leppard camp but he is sharing ideas with them - what a good guy if that's truly the case. Hopefully he is using the ideas for himself as while the last Leppard album was fantastic in its own right we've had 1 new album in the past 9 years (12 if you don't count MIRRORBALL). Still hope Leppard is using this down time to put something together. In the mean time I will continue to rock out to this. Just listened to Bon Jovis New Jersey original LP, complete with clicks and all. What a great album. You can see why with Slippery when Wet and then this that they were competing for the same audience as the Leps. The intro to Lay Your Hands on Me is one of my favourite intros of all time, what an intro to a concert that was as well. Homebound Train opening up side 2 is so underrated, great song.

The intro to Lay Your Hands on Me is one of my favourite intros of all time, what an intro to a concert that was as well. Homebound Train opening up side 2 is so underrated, great song. Actually, Bon Jovi’s New Jersey is the album that got me into Hard Rock in the first place. Before that I was more of a casual listener. I was 11 and used to listen to this Swedish radio show called Tracks which was basically a top 20 show as voted for by the listeners. I recorded the songs I liked. Suddenly ”Born to be My Baby” came on and my life changed. I played that song over and over again. So later that year (1988) I got New Jersey on cassette either for Christmas or my birthday, I can’t remember. Anyways, after that I was hooked on Hard Rock. I later bought Slippery When Wet on LP (my mum bought me my own vinyl player after much pestering). I also upgraded my New Jersey cassette to vinyl. I had namely discovered our small local record store called Skivfabriken (Record Factory). The first time I went there (summer of 1989) I bought 7800* Fahrenheit and another little album by this ”new” band I had discovered, called Hysteria. Anyways, having ”upgraded” the New Jersey LP to CD and then the remastered CD, I just bought a vinyl player a few weeks ago (I haven’t had one for at least ten years and sold all my LP’s (apart from DL collection of course)). One of the first LP’s I have bought is New Jersey by Bon Jovi!

I have been listening to a lot bands on vinyl which I have picking up the last few months . Saxon Iron Maiden Pink Floyd Zz Top and Madonna as well. I have been fortunate to still have been working through the whole pandemic and with no holiday this year to see the guys in USA been spending some the money on vinyl. Hope everyone is well as can be and next year we can go back to the live scene.

Funnily enough I’ve been on a bit of spree picking up some early Saxon, Alice in Chains, Queensryche LPS and any 80’s chart singles that take my fancy. Stuff like Men at Work, Steve Miller and also some early Madonna too. I’m a big fan of her 80’s pop stuff.

My vinyl hoard from the last couple of weeks from Ozzy, Poison, Bon Jovi, Nirvana, Motley Crue and Alice in Chains. 2 of these are reissues with the rest being originals. There’s an unbelievable record store near me that sells purely vinyl. This is just one section of it!!

Windows Media Player was kind enough to select a mix of Metallica and ABBA while I was working. My wife wasn't sure what I was doing. Looking forward to Metallica's S&M 2 this coming week.
