Been on a break from Leppard for awhile but last night I had the urge to listen to Hysteria, so that's what I've done at work today. And it has been pure ear candy with a nice freshness to it after the break.

Over the last week or so I've been listening to some albums from the 80's that I've either not listened to for a long time or just heard in their entirity at all..... Metallicas Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets - I have never listened to these in full before, I think I prefer Ride the Lightning out of those 2, but there are some classics on these. Bon Jovi Slippery when Wet - not listened to this in ages, my second favourite album behind New Jersey in their catalogue (although after Keep the Faith they've gone rubbish IMO). Side 1 of it is great, Let it Rock is one of their best rock songs, but it tails off a bit on side 2. Poison Open Up and Say ahhh - I haven't listened to this since it first came out. Outside of Nothin but a Good Time and Every Rose this is terrible, just weak and vacuous songs that pack no punch at all. In fact very much like some of Motley Crues album tracks IMO in that they're not that good at making full albums. Tesla Mechanical Resonance - Again another one I've never listened to before, I'm not a fan of all of this but tracks that stood out for me were Modern Day Cowboy, Changes, Little Suzi and 2 late 4 love, Comin atcha Live and EZ Come Ez Go. These are another band where I like their best of album but outside of that I can see why they've done much as they don't quite have the quality of songs that say Leps were releasing under Mutt in the 80's. I've also got a box of old Lep cassettes and mini-discs of live shows and radio interviews that I've been going through too. Shows from the Pyromania tour through to the Slang tour on cassette. I need to convert them to my pc and get rid of them really.

Still listening to albums I’ve not heard for a long time and in fact probably focused more on their singles than the full album itself back in the day.
AC/DC The Razors Edge is probably their most consistent album behind Back in Black Of the Johnson era. Some great songs on this, but cut a couple of songs off it and I think I’d regard it a bit better as it’s a touch too long. I’m sure they played the title track at the Monsters of Rock at Donington in 91 but for some reason it’s cut from the dvd.
Megadeth Countdown to Extinction, I have fonder memories of this but now I think outside the singles a lot of this is filler, it’s definitely not as good as its predecessor Rust in Peace and is probably a little too long. Amazing to think back then there wasn’t that much between these and Metallica until the black album exploded everywhere.

Been listening to Last In Line and Dio non stop in preparation of my upcoming LIL show. To be honest, I was never a Dio fan, and I had not given LIL much of a chance because of that, but I bought Heavy Crown and II a couple of weeks ago and I was totally blown away by how good they are. I'm so excited to see them live!!

Bryan Adams Waking up the Neighbours with some Leps inspired production. Reckless is one of my favourite rock albums of the 80’s and I’d say that this album is second only to that in his back catalogue. There are some really good melodic hard rock commercial songs on this (the majority were released as singles of course). Mutt Lange has his stamp all over this though, the drum sound and the big vocals are typical of him, All I Want is You is the albums PSSOM and you can hear why Leps were offered Touch the Hand, it would have fitted perfectly on Adrenalize had Bryan Adams not changed his mind and recorded it himself. My gripes with this are too many ballads, no need for so many. Also as with The Razors Edge and Countdown to Extinction that I mentioned above I think WUTN is also a couple of songs too long. CDs are a great invention but I think it meant some quality control wasn’t exercised and I’d rather hear a solid ten song 45 min album (like the old days) rather than 12-14 over 60-70 mins. On a side note I’ve been to see Bryan Adams a few times in concert, he’s very good live, but it’s very apparent at his shows how few people know that Everything I do is actually quite a long song and everyone starts cheering at the radio edit ending, without realising there’s a whole other section to come!

Until Last in Line came along I’d never explored those Dio albums, so they got me into another band.

Dude, WUTN is fantastic. Bryan almost sounds like Joe on Don't Drop That Bomb On Me. And if you remember, Everything I do was an add on. It was originally for the Robin Hood movie. The first official single was CFTTWS. Good song! I’m actually surprised they put out TWNBAT. That’s a riocker for him. But half that album were hit singles. Yeah it’s a really good album, but Reckless is still my fav by him. I think if WUTN had a couple of fillers cut then it would be even better overall, for me 15 songs is a lot and I find it hard to keep attention over that length of album and like them all. I saw the WUTN 20th anniversary tour, that was a good show too.

Well, I'm like a kid at Christmas today. For me, the next best thing to a new Def Leppard album is a new H.e.a.t album, which I'm cranking today All I can say is Wow. These guys just nail melodic hard rock perfectly. They've taken a step back from some of the experimental type stuff they did on their last album and got back to just doing what they do best. Awesome stuff! Just fresh off from seeing them on the Monster Of Rock cruise last week and it was awesome seeing so many people buzzing on the ship who previously weren't familiar with them. I got to chat with Jeff Keith from Tesla briefly and I had a H.e.a.t shirt on....And he commented on my shirt saying how great they were I told him to work on a Leppard/Tesla/H.e.a.t tour in the US and he said that would be great. I'm not holding my breath though

I'm not holding my breath though For those of us who are fans of the bands that are proverbially carrying on the torch of melodic hard rock, we have definitely been spoiled as of late. Crazy Lixx, Defiants, followed by the excellent PARADIGM by Eclipse (which is now my favorite Eclipse album), and now this album. The singles they had put out already are definitely the best songs, but special shout outs to HEAVEN MUST HAVE WON AN ANGEL that grabbed me immediately, as well as VICTORY. I am a slightly bigger fan of HAREM SCAREM than HEAT but I have to say HS's new one will really have to bring it to top this album. Shaping up to be an unusually great year for music (also really enjoyed the STP acoustic album PERDIDA and looking forward to the new Pearl Jam).

Def Leppard: Basically everything John Waite: Temple Bar (check this guy out, such an underrated artist) Bruce Dickinson: Balls To Picasso (incredible in Maiden and just as good solo) Queensryche: Empire (arguably one of the best metal bands of all time) T. Rex: The Slider (classic with Joe's approval ) Whitesnake: Unzipped (Coverdale at his rawest) Black N' Blue: Self-titled (Tommy Thayer's first band) Bad English: Self-titled (John Waite collaborating with Journey and the Babys members)

Currently listening to the new Harem Scarem album "Change the World". I don't know if it has grabbed me as quickly as their last one, "United", which is a classic, but I'm enjoying it so far.
Everything they do is super-slick, super-catchy melodic rock, and this is no different.

Yeah...Listening to that one also. It does feel like a step back from United....Just not quite as instant for whatever reason. I think I really dug almost every tune on United but there's a few I'm lukewarm on here. Still pretty good though and great band. For me, I think Aftershock and Death of Me are my favorites here. Obviously The Early Years has been in heavy rotation this last couple of weeks, but I've also thrown in Adrenalize too this last week (mainly because it was the anniversary of its release last week). Interestingly on spotify they seem to get tracks mixed up now and again and this week its the Hysteria version of Tear it Down that's been popping up instead of the Adrenalize version. Its quite a jarring change in sound when it suddenly goes in to that version from IWTU. Took the time this week to go through the bootlegs on my hard drive and get some burnt to cd and then file them properly on a hard drive, I've got such a backlog of Lep shows to work through and check that its becoming overwhelming. In the car today I picked out an Hysteria era show from Denmark 88 to listen to, great sound with the standard setlist for the tour but still my favourite era of the band.

I went on a year brake from anything from the 80's and 70's. I wanted to do my homework and really find out what great rock and metal bands came out since 1990. From this I fell in love with Mastodon, Avenged Sevenfold, Mastodon, Slipknot, Mastodon, Rammstein, Asking Alexandria, Mastodon, and Parkway Drive. Guess which of those I've become obsessed with . Add this to bands I had already found from the last 10 years - H.E.A.T, Black Stone Cherry, Shinedown, Halestorm and Alter Bridge and who says metal or rock is dead? Over the next 10 years I think Halestorm and Parkway Drive are going to become massive.

Had a couple of best ofs on in the car on the journey to work this last couple of days. Def Leppard Story so Far, I noticed that Spotify have strangely omitted the tracks from the 2015 album. Also for the first time in years listened to Bon Jovi's 1994 best of - Crossroad. Up there with Vault as being one of my favourite greatest hits albums.

Aerosmith has long been my second favorite band, but their lack of activity when it comes to new music or touring (outside of their Vegas residency) resulted in a long, long period where I didn't listen to them. Over the last couple of weeks, I've finally broken that streak. Started with shuffling, then I started listening to each of their albums in order. It's been fun to go back and listen after such a long break. Makes me wish I could see them again soon since I haven't seen them live since 2015. I was going to go to Vegas last year to catch a couple of their residency shows in June, but a certain other band announcing a Vegas residency nixed those plans. I definitely got a better value for what I saw from that other band than if I had gone to see Aerosmith.
Currently on the covers record, Honkin' On Bobo. Some really good stuff here, but sadly it means I'll get stuck listening to "Stop Messin' Around," which is their version of "Rock On." The damn thing just won't go away. Aerosmith fans have been stuck with that tune since the early 90's though.

Theres something about the vast majority of Aerosmith pre-Permanent Vacation that doesn't grab me, some of it does, but I think its the lack of oomph and meat in their production and guitars that turns me off it. I need to give them another whirl.

I need to give them another whirl. I've been ranking the albums as I've gone to pass the time between work. Many fans seem to be split between the 'classic' era of 73-80 while others prefer the 'new' era of 87-01. Not much has happened since then. I came on board as a fan in 2001 and grew into a huge fan as I explored their entire discography. I prefer the 70's stuff, as Toys In The Attic and Rocks are my two favorites of theirs (with Rocks taking the crown, which in one hell of a coincidence was released 20 years to the day before my favorite Lep album). But my third favorite album is Pump and I have a lot of love for Nine Lives and Just Push Play as well. I recognize the latter hasn't aged all that well, but that album is what was new when I really got into the band so there's a lot of sentiment to me with that era. Plus I still think "Beyond Beautiful" and "Sunshine" are two of the best songs the band has ever done. To me, Aerosmith's success was more America-centric in the 70's but they became international upon their comeback in 1987.
