Started a new job today which is longer drive than my last role, so I took the chance to throw on an old bootleg from the Leps Hysteria tour, one of the Hammersmith Odeon shows in London from Sept 1987. Great to hear all the songs when they are still fresh and relatively new in setlists.
So basically no one speaks at my new job, it’s heads down and crack on with the work. All it’s missing is a bloke at the front, oiled up wearing a leather thong beating a drum to ramming speed. So today I took the opportunity to listen to Maidens first 5 albums again on Spotify in order. I have to say that Piece of Mind is the stand out for me so far, that’s got the most classics on it I’d say.l, closely followed by NOTB. 50% of Powerslave is a massive disappointment and not as strong as I seem to remember.

Over the last couple of days I’ve listened to iron maidens studio albums from 1980-1990. Which is the first time in ages I’ve done that. I got in to them in 88 when I heard The evil that men Do from the Seventh Son album and from then on that’s pretty much been my all time fav Maiden album. I don’t actually think I bought another album until No Prayer in 1990, but just prior to that I picked up the First ten years set of single rereleases which came out in early 1990 and that’s how I got more familiar with their early singles. Then obviously after that I went back to discover their 80s catalogue.
Overall my rankings of those releases haven’t changed too much, with Seventh Son and No Prayer still my top 2, but Piece of Mind is much better than I remember whilst Powerslave is a lot worse than I remember too. I think overall I prefer the production they got with Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son, I like that more polished sound.
I really struggle to get in to their first 2 albums, there are some great songs on there but I’m not that much of a fan of Paul Di’annos voice. It’s amazing to think Maiden released 8 albums from 1980-1990 and were doing world tours in between. They must have been burnt out. One of the things I’ve always thought about Maiden in that period is that their singles were so strong, unbelievably good, whilst their albums had a couple of other strong songs but some filler too. I think in the main that still true, but Seventh Son, No Prayer, NOTB and Piece of Mind are the albums where I enjoy the most material on them. The others less so.
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son - A classic album IMO, I can listen front to back to all 8 songs with no problem and Infinite Dreams is my favourite Maiden track.
No Prayer for the Dying - 10 songs on this one. I’m a big fan of this, yet I don’t think Maiden fans feel the same about it. Bruce’s vocals are different to his past work with a Maiden, so I understand that being a sticking point too. But it’s like an album virtually full of immediate singles.
The Number of the Beast - tough call between this and Piece of Mind, they are so close but with me liking 6 out of 8 it just shades it. It gets off to a bad start with Invaders, but other than Gangland it’s a classic. Hallowed be thy Name is the standard for all heavy metal songs IMO.
Piece of Mind - A break from the norm with 9 songs instead of 8 and the first 6 are fantastic. Where Eagles Dare in particular is the standout for me.
Somewhere in Time - I like 5 out of 8 here, Stranger in a Strange Land is up there with Infinite Dreams.
Killers - even though it features Paul Di’anno there are some really good songs on this. None more so than the title track.
Powerslave - I only like 4 out of 8 here with it being book ended by 2 great songs at each end.
Iron Maiden - I look at this like OTTN for Leppard. Some good songs but a band not quite there yet.
The RRHOF show made me want to hear more of Roxy Music, so I’ve been listening to their Best Of quite a bit lately.
Funny, since the Ceremony, I've been listening to The Cure and The Zombies more. I hadn't listened to either in years. Maybe I'm trying to relive that night. :-) Or Def Leppard reintroduced me to some old music.
Following on from my long winded post last week about Iron Maiden I listened to their studio albums, back to back, from 1992s Fear of the Dark all the way to 2015s Book of Souls. I came sum it up in a few words, what a hard slog that was. There’s a lot of great stuff IMO on their albums from 80-92, but from 92 to now I think it’s mainly poor.
Starting the rot is Fear of the Dark, an album that was the end of the Bruce Dickinson era and he sounds like his heart isn’t it, his vocal delivery had really changed on that album. But more than that the songs were mainly forgettable. I think only 4 out of 12 Iike now, Be Quick or be Dead, Fear of then dark, Wasting Love and Afraid to Shoot Strangers. Maybe the loss of Adrian Smith was a bit factor? But having said that I like the album before this and that’s didn’t feature him either.
The Blaze era is forgettable at best. Both the X Factor and Virtual XI suffer from Blazes flat vocal delivery that adds no energy to the songs at all. The X factor also seemed to be when their style was starting to change, becoming like a prog band with some of the styles within the songs, and basically I think they were becoming too overblown with too many songs and too many long ones at that. If I had to pick any songs from these 2 albums I think Virtual XI is probably the better of the 2 and I;d go with The Clansman as being the only track I like from these albums.
2000 saw thew return of Bruce and Adrian and the first 'reunion' album is one of their best. Brave New World has some great songs on it, if they'd cut the last 2 songs and went with 8 tracks I'd have said this is arguably up there with their best. Thats how much I like those first 8 tracks. Even though some of them see that prog influence evident in them, its doesn't take anything away from those songs. Great album.
The next one is a disappointment, Dance of Death is another album thats just too long. It starts off well with the opening 3 tracks, but as it progresses it gets worse and only Paschendale stands out. The problem for me is the length of songs and their style, they seem too wordy, too story like and some of the riffs sound like they could be played on a flute, theres no meat to some of those guitar parts. At this point I'd say they were losing that edge they had where you'd have albums consisting of strong shorter and immediate rock songs with great riffs and catchy choruses. Mixed with a few longer tracks that again were guitar and musical masterpieces.
A Matter of Life and Death is up there for me as one of their worst. Only The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg is worthy of listening to again. Just like the X Factor this album just seems to blend in to one long song.
The Final Frontier, see above, as this is to me just the same as AMOLAD, too long (nearly 80 minutes) and boring. I'd pick the single El Dorado as the only one I can take from this album as being worth repeating.
The Book of Souls. Another ridiculously long album, this time 91 minutes, yes 91 minutes! 11 songs spread over 2 discs, I struggle to get past disc 1 to be honest because its all so long. But overall it is an improvement and maybe even their second best reunion album behind Brave New World.
Its hard tp rank this last 27 years of Maiden album as to me (Brave New World aside) they're so similar. But no doubt they've changed a lot and lost something that set them aside in the 80s IMO.
Spinning the new Crazy Lixx album Forever Wild today. All I can say is Wow, these guys keep getting better and better.
This one is the most melodic album they've made IMO and it sounds like it's time warped from the late 80's. Their last album Ruff Justice sorta had an 80's horror movie vibe and this one has an 80's, driving with the top down, summer vibe.
Just fantastic seeing bands like Crazy Lixx and H.e.a.t making new music so obviously influenced by the the genre of music Def Leppard helped pioneer in the 80's
--Johnny Cash (always) --VEGA. I got hooked when they opened for DnO. --Great Big Sea (now defunct band out of Newfoundland. Celtic/pop-rock with an occasional side of folk. Back in the day they had moments when they really reminded me of Leppard.)
Listening to the new Whitesnake album Flesh and Blood, there’s some really good songs on it. Especially in the first half of the cd.
Agreed, I'm really enjoying it too. The first few songs released had a very "greatest hits" vibe to me but as a whole there's very much a mix of old-school WS alongside the more modern sound of their most recent releases. Good stuff.

I feel the same. I can’t stop playing Hey you, love that one. This could be their best album since 1987.

I tried this album but honestly didn't do much for me. It does rock pretty good though and I can see why people like it.
I've just never been a huge Whitesnake fan. I did like their bigger hits in the 80's but they just aren't a band I've stayed into for whatever reason.
I do like a couple songs on the new album....Shut Up & Kiss Me is pretty good.
I'm just too into the new Crazy Lixx to pay much attention to anything else right now. Toss 80's Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Skid Row and maybe Crazy Nights era Kiss in a blender and I think this Crazy Lixx album is the result
