These are a band that I've heard lots of positives about, but I've never tried them out. What tracks should I look for that would define them?

They are a mixed bag. Their biggest album is "Moving Pictures," which I would say is a good starting point. It has some of their most well known songs such as "Tom Sawyer," "Limelight," "YYZ," and "Red Barchetta." Their 70's material is very prog rock, basically science-fictiony kind of stuff. I'm not crazy about a lot of that, but there is still some good stuff and a few rock radio hits throughout. The 80's kicked into a more straightforward rock phase that saw the super long jam songs kind of fade away and keyboards came into the mix, making things a bit more commercial. The 90's were a bit of a contiuation of that but stripped the keyboards back a bit to make it more straightforward rock. The 2000's are bascially a shift into a slightly different style of rock. Perhaps the best starting point would be a compilation like the one disc " The Spirit Of Radio." It only covers up to 1987 but gives you the majority of their most well known stuff through that time period. For a more 'complete' hits compilation, I'd say go with Retrospective I, II (or Gold, which is a two disc set that is basically Retrospective I & II with one track swapped for another), and III.

Lyrically, on many albums, they had some very important messages they put out. The band themselves are very intellectual. And I have a great deal of respect for where that inspiration comes from.

I love his solo! I also miss Rock On. I think he deserves a solo & I think it gives Joe a min to rest his voice. Rock on was way overplayed, the only reason it got played as much as it did is because they actually played it on the radio. Would be nice if they played leppard orginal songs on the radio lol Guitar, Bass and Drum solos went out of style in 1989... there is nothing entertaining about them when you have a limited set list time. imo the band should be banging out more leppard songs vs adding instrumentals, solos and cover songs... but i guess playing switch 625 is a tribute to steve every show and i can understand why they want to play it.... i just feel it's over played and would be more special if they only played every now and again. Joe's vocal range is shot, but he still has the strength. If his voice really needed rest during the show he wouldn't be doing a radio show on the road and doing piles of interviews promoting the tour every day. People that need vocal rest don't talk unless they need to. His voice is as good as it gets these days it ain't gonna get any better with rest. VH still has solos. Fans expect them. ESpecially from Eddie. AS far as resting voices, Ann Wilson rarely talks during the day. She saves her awesome voice.

Phil and Viv do not play guitar like he does, and they aren't half as famous for it. Eddie himself is about as famous as DL, which is bad for the band but still. And however much I love Sav, Eddie's solo kicks his ass any day. a minute and a half eruption does that. The other thing about VH these days is that Dave can't sing. Eddie's solo and Al's somewhat are better then half the songs with Dave ruining them by screaming over them.

Yeah EVH is a Guitar hero to multiple generations of musicians. It's about going to see Eddie when you see VH and not going to see roth. Van Halen songs were about what eddie was playing in them whether is was guitar riffs or his solos or his keyboard playing.
My first VH album was 5150 with Sammy on vocals and i was hooked, they truly peaked with Sammy and extended the life of VH imo. Van Hagar brought VH to the next level as both song writers and as live performers. If Roth had stayed with VH they would have imploded shorty after.
Vivian was a bit of a guitar hero to young fans when he played with Dio on those first 3 albums because his ideas were fresh and he had song writing input. Tons of young musicians were influenced by those early dio albums and Vivians playing.
But joining def leppard was about joining a band of singer song writers and it being all about the songs and not the individual players within the band. Doing that the band has been able to stay together and not one individual members ego has gotten out of control. I think Vivian liked the stability of a band like def leppard and the success they had vs being a hired gun like he had been in dio and whitesnake.
IMO Def Leppard has had better success around the world than Van Halen has. I remember at one point VH was opening for Bon Jovi in Europe. Add to that the disaster the VH3 Album was with Gary Cherone. Van Halen isn't on the same level as Def Leppard, maybe back in the 80's they were close but other than that VH has been it's own worst enemy over the years.

There's a huge difference in an Eddie Van Halen guitar solo and a Rick Savage bass solo.
I don't think the vast majority of people want to see a bass solo and IMO they are boring as hell, regardless of who is playing them. A waste of time, especially when there is such a strict time limit.

I became a VH fan in the 80's before Dave left but I have to say if given the choice between Sammy or Dave on lead vocals i gotta go with Sammy. I was Sammy fan before he joined VH. Loved his early mid 80's solo stuff.

Exactly. You see VH and a solo by Eddie is expected. No one expects a solo of any type from DL and there's no reason for one.
I'm not a fan of solos from most bands. Probably the only two exceptions for me are Eddie and Neil Peart.

Meeting Eddie, on my bucket list. Had front row tix for VH in front of Eddie & they cancelled. I had already seen them in the 2nd row between Wolfie & DLR, but it's not the same.
Blessing in disguise tho. Took our refund & bought front row Leps in front of Sav!!!! I would have never met Sav had I gone to the VH show.

Eddie just kicks too much ass.
Also, I don't really think it is fair to compare Def Leppard to Van Halen. from 78 to 82, VH was way bigger than DL. 83 and 84 is debatable as much as DL was surging with Pyro. From then onn though, DL was bigger than anything VH was capable of. VH had Eddie, and the most energetic frontman in rock music for 7 years, and they kicked ass. As far as major release goes, VH kicked DL ass out of the gate though. Van Halen I was their first album, and it went diamond. DL didn't accomplish that until their third.
But that doesn't mean anything about the bands themselves. AFD was what put GNR on the map as a huge deal - one of the best debut albums in rock for sure, same as VHI

I've never really got into VH. Apart from buying their greatest hits vol 1, I guess I'm a typical casual fan. Theres no denying that they made some classic songs, I just arent sure I'd like their albums.

Comparing DL to VH is tough...
DL wins in terms of who has the bigger albums, though that's debatable since both have two diamond albums.
But perhaps VH is better off for having their successful singles spread out over the majority of their catalogue rather than being tied down to two albums.
And I think if you ask any average Joe who was bigger, DL or VH, they'd choose VH almost every time. Even with all the crap they've gone through and put their fans through.

I bought the new album when it came out and then when I decided to go see them, I bought all of the Roth era albums. They've got some great album cuts from that era. I don't really listen to any of the albums all the way through, but I've definitely expanded past the singles. I can't speak for the Hagar era but I do plan on getting those albums eventually.

I LOVE this!!!!!
When The Van Halen Brothers Met The Wilson Sisters SEPTEMBER 27, 2012 LEAVE A COMMENT
You might have heard that in Heart’s newly released memoir, the Wilson sisters share their strange tale of meeting the Van Halen brothers on the road in 1979. Here’s the full story from Nancy Wilson herself: At one hotel, we met Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Over the course of a few hours, they had a Kamikaze-drinking contest, followed by a cocaine-snorting fest. Once they were good and loose, they got into a fistfight. Moments later, they were hugging each other and falling down, saying, “I love you so much, man.” They would cycle through this pattern every hour. Eddie and Alex let it be known that if Ann and I wanted to sleep with them, they would be amenable to that. Their concept was two brothers with two sisters: lnstead of the Wil-Shers, we could now be the Wil-Halens, except they wanted us in one bed. It wasn’t the only time we had that offer, and as with every other request, we turned it down. Talking with Eddie that night, he said he really admired my acoustic playing. “You should play your acoustic guitar onstage,” I said. “I don’t own an acoustic guitar,” Eddie said. Eddie Van Halen–at that point one of the greatest living guitar players, when he wasn’t punching his brother in the face–didn’t own a single acoustic guitar. I couldn’t believe it. But he swore it was true. “I’m going to buy you an acoustic guitar right now,” I announced. I went and woke up our road manager. He told me that at midnight instrument stores were closed. “Then let’s give him one of mine,” I declared. We went to our gear truck, and I took my favorite Ovation. I walked up to Eddie’s room and handed it to him. He started crying. “That’s the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me,” Eddie said. I went to my room to sleep. But at seven in the morning, my phone rang. It was Eddie. “Nancy, Nance, sweet Nancy, sweetest Nancy,” he said. He was obviously still high and had been up all night. “I wrote a song for you on my Nancy-Nancy acoustic guitar.” He put the phone down and started to play. He was only a few rooms down the hall, so I could also hear him through the walls. The song went on for many minutes and was truly amazing. It was more of a suite than a song, but it was beautiful. Eventually, the line went dead–I think Eddie had passed out. I don’t know if he ever played the song again, or even if, when he sobered up, he remembered anything about the night, except that he and Alex didn’t manage to take the Wilsons to bed. But it was the best thing I ever heard Eddie Van Halen play. I only wish I could hear it again. -This excerpt is from Heart’s newly published memoir ‘Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock & Roll’ By Jessica Hopper.

Checked out some of the new album on Youtube today. Liked the Carrie Underwood duet better than I thought I would. Very much Carrie complementing an Aerosmith song very similar to what Tim Mcgraw did with a Leppard song. 'Another Last Goodbye' is like some crazy cross between 'November Rain' and 'Love'. 'Oh Yeah' very '70ish Aerosmith...liked it a lot. I'm overall a lot more interested to hear the rest of it as I wasn't incredibly impressed with the first few they threw out there a few months ago.

Nice one Luca. Thank you and I hope you thanked your extremely good looking female friend for me How was the concert btw? i did my best to thank her for you, Andy... And she added also her Dublin footage... Well, great show in a nice venue (same as Leps in 2006) and I fully enjoyed it from the front row. At the end of the show I met the band "unmasked"... My car was parked right in front of the backstage door (as usual at the Volkshaus) and after a few minutes spent talking to their stage rodie (so worried they have to leave and travel so much to play Paris tonite) I was invited to get into backstage when all those b**es got out. I am not sure it was much more convincing me saying I had to drive back to Milano during the night or the girl next to me However it was so unreal to see them unmasked and ready to travel.. They were so really really kind with us maybe because they were feeling they were talking to real fans and not to the bitches there were before.. Lexxi even ordered immediately a pot of tea for me (saying "you have to drive safe home through the ice and snow and since you're italian I cant offer you a coffee in Switzerland!"). I mentioned Micheal that if Viv leaves Leps for playing with the Dio band is gonna be their fault and he laughed and said they are absolutely great friends with the California connection of the Leps (and satchel added something which seemed to me to mean thats not the same with the "Irish" guys). So great to see and talk to them while not being the onstage characters... Can you imagine them waving to us while leaving with the car and saying drive safe....

Luca you can get where water can't! ;D
Great that you got to meet them. So you met them without their wigs on? I take it they were as they say 'attending the grand opening of some pussy' before they let the dudes outside in?
I can't view the videos at work so I'll have to check them out later.
I go to see them next Tuesday. Looking forward to it.

So you met them without their wigs on? Yeah, they were simply playing their onstage role with all those girls and the great thing was that when I got in they were just relaxing and preparing to leave by tour bus to Paris It was like when we all are done at work and getting ready to go back home. They not only took off their wigs after the girls left, they totally changed their behavior being probably what they are. They all have been so nice, I simply couldnt believe I was drinking tea with them in the backstage talking about music ... I think that was the setlist... In the Future Supersonic Sex Machine Tomorrow Night Fat Girl (Thar She Blows) Asian Hooker Just Like Tiger Woods Let Me Cum In If You Really Really Love Me Guitar Solo Turn Out the Lights The Shocker It Won't Suck Itself Girl From Oklahoma Party All Day (*Edited by Admin* All Night) Death to All but Metal Community Property Eyes of a Panther 17 Girls in a Row

Just listened to LUV XXX...totally an '80s Aerosmith song. Really like the groove. Oh Yeah still my favorite one of the new ones I've heard.
EDIT: Oh Yeah is no longer my favorite now that I listened to Street Jesus...what a beast of a song!

Yeah so Out Go The Lights... AMAZING groove! After hearing the vast majority of this album it's like a timewarp to each decade of Aerosmith. You get the amazing, good, bad and indifferent. Some really good stuff here all in all. Anyone else checked it out?

I've been holding out on listening to the streams on Rolling Stone. Being that I became an Aerosmith fan in 2001, and had no idea I'd have to wait 11 years for their next all original studio album, I'm waiting to get the disc(s) on Tuesday. And I can't wait.
So all I've heard so far are "Legendary Child," "Oh Yeah," "What Could Have Been Love," "Lover Alot," and... "Street Jesus."
Like everything I've heard so far, especially "Street Jesus" (even though I've only heard it once so far awhile back, long before the RS streams, in a moment of weakness ;D ).

I've been holding out on listening to the streams on Rolling Stone. Being that I became an Aerosmith fan in 2001, and had no idea I'd have to wait 11 years for their next all original studio album, I'm waiting to get the disc(s) on Tuesday. And I can't wait. I wish I had your willpower to wait to hear an entire album proper. With albums I've been anticipating I can never do it (and I've tried believe me ;D) All 15 songs are all over youtube now (and of course the songs on the Rolling Stone premiere). I've been checking out the Aerosmith forum also to see what others think about it and it seems like a lot of fans are trashing a lot of it, which is a shame. I think overall it's a great comeback album although it has it's share of filler (what 15 track album doesn't though). Out Go The Lights might be my favorite Aerosmith song in 20 years. Street Jesus and Oh Yeah are up there too, coincidentally all of the real '70ish sounding songs. I also really dig LUV XXX as they always seem to have awesome album openers (even their subpar albums) which sounds like something right off of Pump or Permanent Vacation. Beautiful is also really good...has this '70s vibe in the verses and then the chorus takes it up a notch and makes it sound like a more recent thing off of something like Nine Lives. I'm unfortunately not a big fan of any of the ballads as they to me are pretty generic sounding with the exception of 'Another Last Goodbye' which evokes a lot of emotion with how strong it is...awesome album closer (hopefully not the last?) I'm also not a huge fan of the couple they have that are sung by other band members...I'm not a hardcore Aerosmith fan so maybe you need to be to really appreciate those. Overall though the album is very good and is worlds better than JPP. I'm looking forward to picking up the Deluxe Edition on Tuesday as I've heard clips of the other bonus tracks and they sound pretty good (specifically Sunny Side Of Love which I thought the 30 second clip makes it sound better than about half the songs that made the album.) Good luck waiting the last few days. ;D
