New Metallica thoughts - one dimensional songs come and go without making great impression. Need to cut the flab, at least two songs should not be on album. Like Maiden need producer, not someone who records the album, tells them to do it again! Too many bridges and pointless fills. Lacks variety. Lux and bass highlight. Better than St Anger not as good as Hard Wired! 5/10
Number 1 iTunes in 44 countries, the Americas to come.

The night before a new Metallica album, the excitement! Have seen Metallica close to 20 times, will see them in Warsaw next summer 2024. Master through the Black album are immense for me. Death Magnetic very good, the Loaded era could have been all done on 1 album. St Anger, ouch! Hardwired hit and miss. Cover albums immense! Great promo for the album, listening parties, Kimmel, Stern, independent record stores opening at midnight, videos look good. The songs hit and miss! Hope huge success but may miss number 1 in US as Morgan Wallen album doing crazy sales. Fingers xx it is somewhere between Death Magnetic and Hardwired. Please not between Lulu and St Anger! My hot take is that in short Metallica have done nothing consistently good since the black album.

As much as I love Metallica from Master through Black albums and the Garage Days material, since 1996 their studio albums have been broadly disappointing. Metallica fans have been very forgiving of their misfires (loaded albums, st anger, lulu) more so than any other band I can think of. Death Magnetic is very good, Hard Wired so so.
Metallica are kings of metal despite of themselves. New album broadly loved by Metallica fans, though that could be recency bias. As always, hope for huge sales for all bands I like.

I checked out the cinema premiere of the album on Thursday night. Really cool way to check out an album you are interested in for the first time and apparently they will be broadcasting their 2 night show in Arlington, TX live in theatres in August also. Would love to see more bands do something like this. In terms of the album, it definitely has some great moments. SHADOWS FOLLOW, SLEEPWALK MY LIFE AWAY and YOU MUST BURN! all have roots not far from S/T with some great hooks/riffs and song structures. CHASING LIGHT and TOO FAR GONE? also have some great vocal hooks that are not typically reminiscent of something you'd expect from Metallica but I think really work. Most of the songs do have redeeming qualities to them with great moments. Sonically it does sound fantastic and Hetfield really shines here vocally...it's crazy to me that both he and Joe sound just as good if not better than they did 15 years ago. I think the criticism falls with how similar each song sounds to one another, and how locomotive the vast majority of it is. While the album doesn't really have any low lows it is largely devoid of the high highs of complex structures/tempo shifts/vocal melodies that you typically are accustomed to hearing with the best songs they've done. Listening to them describe every song almost identically musically during the cinema premiere reinforced how similar and at times derivative each song can be. Overall I like the album, and the Dolby Atmos mix really does a nice job of accentuating the vocal hooks that are here, but unfortunately for me also it's not as good as the last couple of albums as a whole. Morgan Wallen's single Last Night just entered the UK Top 40 at 35. It is number 1 on the Billboard Top 100, having 30 million streams last week, and in Australia, where country music has taken off. Wallen is a stadium artist in the US. Luke Combs is very big and does stadiums now. Both recently played arena shows in Australia.
Wallens current album been number 1 in US and Canada for past 6 or 7 weeks since release doing serious numbers. His last album Dangerous just certified 5 times Platinum in US.
Wallen was almost 'cancelled' last year for something he said. Outside of Taylor Swift he is arguably the most popular singer in North America.
That said none of Wallens songs stand out for me. Chris Stapleton or Miranda Lambert work better for me.
New Metallica album only did 23300 in UK over the weekend though will be number 1. In US Metallica may not gain their 7th number 1 album because of Morgan Wallen, forecast comes out in a couple of hours.

Phil Collen on Jeff Beck: “Jeff’s amp blew up and his pedalboard didn’t work, so they just brought in another Marshall – he sounded exactly the same. He didn’t even flinch”By Jenna Scaramanga( Total Guitar ) published about 2 hours ago The Def Leppard guitarist reflects on the life and legacy of Jeff Beck, and explains how Beck's trailblazing style is all over the the Leppard catalog“Jeff Beck has always been one of my idols because he’s unique. No-one sounds like him, no-one plays like him, and you’ve got to respect that more than anything else. Everyone else you ever play with, there’s always a tip of the hat to the archetype they learned from. Beck is an archetype, like Jimi Hendrix is an archetype. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him. No-one was able to get anywhere close to that. “All your idols, you think they’re gonna last forever. When Bowie went, when Prince went, I’m like, ‘What do you mean they’re not here?’ This was like that. When my dad died, he was 81 and he had a good 15 years left in him. He was just getting going. Jeff Beck was like that. There was so much life in him, in his playing and in him personally.” Jamming with Jeff“I was fortunate enough to play with him and hang out with him at the Classic Rock Awards in 2016, and he was like a young guy, with all this wealth of experience and uniqueness. We were actually honouring Jimmy Page. “Jeff’s amp blew up and his pedalboard didn’t work, so they just brought in another Marshall, and he sounded exactly the same. He didn’t even flinch. I’ve seen some guitar players throw their guitars or get really flustered. Jeff was like, ‘Yeah? Bring it on!’ To me, that was just great.” More jamming with Jeff“He was doing a bunch of songs. Robert DeLeo [of Stone Temple Pilots] was playing bass. He goes, ‘Phil, he wants to do Superstition, do you want to sing it?’ I’m like, ‘Absolutely!’ So I sang and played guitar and then Jeff goes, ‘Well, you’ve got to stay up and do Beck’s Bolero.’ I said, ‘But I only know the lead part!’ He goes, ‘Just come in on the heavy part.’ “When you’re having this conversation on stage, you go, ‘*Edited by Admin*, it’s Jeff Beck!’ Ray Luzier [Korn] was on drums. Dean DeLeo [also of Stone Temple Pilots] was playing guitar as well, and he just shouted the chords out for me and we got around it. Robert DeLeo goes, ‘Jeff, please just play a bit of Freeway Jam!‘ “Jeff said, ‘What?!’ This is real Jeff Beck geekdom – there’s a live album with Jan Hammer and Jeff where they’re jamming, making car noises. I went into making car noises, and Jeff just went into the Freeway Jam. It was so cool actually hearing that live with the guy playing it, an incredible thing to be part of.” Flying solo“I’ve been listening to Beck since the ’60s. I’m from London and he was always floating around. First it was The Yardbirds, then later on he went off on a tangent like no-one else. I love all the fusion stuff with Stanley Clarke, all of his solo albums, especially Blow By Blow and There & Back, which is just amazing. “I always thought that the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart on vocals could have been a huge band. They were supposed to play Woodstock, but Jeff had to fly home, so they never got to do it. “Then Jeff launched a solo career. It was all instrumental, which was way better. It highlighted his guitar playing. And then we got Rod Stewart in the Faces, so everyone gained from them not doing Woodstock, even though if they’d done it they could’ve been as big as Led Zeppelin.” That vibrato“Blow By Blow was the first time he really shone. The songs were beautiful, the playing was unlike anything I’d ever heard. It was just gorgeous. You can tell a guitar player from their vibrato, and no-one has successfully copied Jeff Beck’s vibrato. That album to me really kicked it off. Because I’m from London, I got to see everyone: Deep Purple, Bowie with Mick Ronson, Zeppelin, Rory Gallagher, but Blow By Blow stood out.” The Strat and the Les Paul“I got my first Les Paul in 1976. I saw Jeff with Beck, Bogert & Appice at the Rainbow Theatre. He was playing a Les Paul there but he would switch to a Strat sometimes. It’s like, why not? I got a Strat and I would switch between them, and then I ended up playing the Jackson PC-1 which is like the ultimate hybrid.” Bend it like Beck“When we did the G3 tour, my guitar tech, John Zucker, goes up to Joe Satriani and asks, ‘How you can do this double stop country bend [with a Floyd Rose] and it doesn’t go out of tune?’ Joe said, ‘That’s palming.’ Say you’ve got your little finger on the E string and you bend the B string, you push down on the bridge so it doesn’t go out of tune. I think that came from Jeff Beck because he’s been doing that for years.” The tribute“When I recorded Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers [for the 1995 tribute album Jeffology], I knew it in my head. I knew the vibrato, the bends, and all of that stuff, so when I had to apply it, it became easier. I’ve always only worked out little parts of songs, just a lick or a verse, but I knew how it was supposed to feel. “If you want to do a really killer drum fill or a guitar fill, it should only last for a bar or you’re taking away from the thing you’re trying to convey. So for the most part it’s the same as what Jeff was playing but occasionally I just throw a little bit of me in there, but not long enough for it to detract from what the song’s supposed to be.” Jeff Leppard!“I play Beck licks all the time in Def Leppard. I actually do some of the vibrato things and whammy bar things. I was listening to Jeff’s version of Goodbye Pork Pie Hat the other day and I’m going, ‘Oh, !’ There’s something I do constantly in there, and that’s where it comes from. I constantly play them. “I’m really a fusion fan. I love Stanley Clarke on his own and Stanley with Jeff Beck. There’s a great track called Hello Jeff from a Stanley Clarke album and I’m constantly playing like that.” A different beat“When Beck collaborated with [EDM producers] Apollo 440 I totally applauded that. I think that the more tools you have to experiment with, the better you can express yourself. I do it all the time. I’m always using different beats and even some music trends that I’m not a fan of, I still kind of incorporate. There’s great stuff all the all the way around. So when Jeff Beck did that, it’s absolutely what you’re supposed to do.” Jeff and Jagger“When we were recording Hysteria in Holland, Mick Jagger was doing his second solo album with Simon Phillips on drums and Jeff Beck on guitar. You can’t hear *Edited by Admin* all through a studio door but I’m still trying to listen because I know they’re in there! Then the door opens and it’s Jagger. “He goes, 'Hey man, come on in!' So me and [Leppard drummer] Rick Allen went in. We’re sitting in the control room with Mick Jagger doing a live vocal, and there’s Jeff Beck and Simon Phillips playing live with Doug Wimbish on bass. It was completely surreal.” The pursuit of happiness“Some people just express themselves in a beautiful way. That’s why Beck was Beck. I think the integrity of your actions makes you happy. He could have been in the Stones, but he had his own stuff to say. Some artists want to be famous above everything else. That’s not the Beck way. He kept his integrity and that’s really rare – I think he was completely happy with choosing that.” Source

Thanks for the insight! I honestly have no idea who either of these guys are lol. I guess that's what happens today. I don't listen to radio and I only listen to exactly what I want to listen to on Spotify. I'm not hearing top 40 countdowns anymore like I used to back in the day so don't get nearly the exposure to more "popular" stuff that I used to. I do at least know know Taylor Swift though Morgan Wallen's single Last Night just entered the UK Top 40 at 35. Metallica likely to miss number 1 in US, sales forecast 150000, Wallen 167000.
Greta Van Fleet announce world tour of arenas, curious how that does.
Crue in the studio with Bob Rock, interesting.
Modern music seems to have lost melody. Lots of big hits don't have choruses.

UK final Kiss shows proving to be a difficult sell. Plymouth outdoor stadium show cancelled and Glasgow arena show offering 2 for 1. Glasgow is 2 days after Lepps play the city. Guns N Roses play Glasgow June 27. Lot of competition about.
Saw funny photo on metallica forum, Tobias Forge singer and brains of Ghost was in the snakepit for Metallica Paris gig, (almost) no one recognised him.
Metallica Paris and Amsterdam shows had entire sections of the stadiums curtained off as not sold out. Granted playing in the middle and doing 2 shows (most bought tickets for both nights I think).
Power Trip festival apparently not sold great, consumers feeling the pinch generally I think.
Curious if ACDC possible tour 2024 will be 16 European shows, 6 North American shows, including Toronto, as band oddly not quite moved from arena status to stadiums in all NA markets. In German speaking countries band could do 10 nights in stadiums.

Kiss about to announce Sydney Accor stadium gig for October 7, tickets go on sale next Wednesday apparently. Simmons tweeted, then deleted post. Huge stadium holds 83000.
Lepps Crue Australia tour has been suggested for many weeks, if Kiss announcement true won't help Lepps sell tickets. More Kiss shows maybe added in Oz.

This is not giving Leppard/Crue much space to build momentum and/or promote.

Apparently online petition. Kiss maybe struggling to sell tickets in UK but Oz loves them. Still Accor stadium holds 83000, would think Gene and Paul be all over Oz media if announcement is true as that is a big sell.
Rumour has it Kiss playing AFL Grand Final (bit like Super Bowl) September 30 in Melbourne which would be significant boost to ticket sales and may suggest a Marvel stadium gig in Melbourne around October 3. Marvel has a roof.

I think the first 2 rows at the concert you went to weren't used.
Was trying to find a detailed seating map for Kiss in Sydney but Ticketek website not up to Ticketmasters standard. If accept general seating map available then looks like sold quite well.
New Extreme album out soon, curious how it sounds.

Also curious to check out the new Extreme album. I see they've just dropped a new single. It's a bit different from the other singles...reminds me a little of songs like Kansas or .38 Special mgiht've done in the early 80's. I've never been a big Extreme fan but I've liked some songs of theirs here and there but feel like I'll need to check out the new album after liking what I've heard so far. The Extreme song you clipped I checked out for the first time today and it's probably the best Extreme song I've heard in 30 years. Really calls back to their '90s output and love the chorus. I'm also really looking forward to the new Foo Fighters album out Friday. Really liked the first 2 singles and also checked out their latest 2 songs today SHOW ME HOW and THE TEACHER...both songs are fantastic. Lyrically the songs are poignant for obvious reasons and really resonating for me. Might be my favorite album of theirs since WASTING LIGHT based on the 4 song sample. Also looking forward to the new Defiants and Eclipse albums. New Defiants songs are all solid. Hoping to hear more Eclipse soon as was a bit underwhelmed by their first single. Should be a strong summer for music. Also curious to check out the new Extreme album. I see they've just dropped a new single. Europe sell part of their catalog, that one song must be a huge earner have lots of potential in disaster movies!
Coldplay did 300000 tickets in Singapore, population 6 million, in minutes. I joined the queue just as an exercise and was at 814000!
Taylor Swift playing Singapore, 3 nights, her 150000 tickets go fast. Expect Swifts UK shows to sell out super fast, maybe Poland not so fast.

A gig has been announced by a band called Dogs of War in London the day before Wembley at a 450 capacity venue. Speculation is that it’s Crue.

This band has been on my bucket list for a very long time thanks to our own Joe hyping them up for years. The hype was real and The Struts put on one of the best shows I have ever seen. Luke is a monster of a frontman and I hope they continue to make music for a long time. And im beyond convinced now that they would make a killer paring with the boys. A lot of people I met were fans of Lep and I know Joe has said before he would love to tour with them.
