I've been listening to his covers since I joined the forum. Congrats Ben! I can't imagine seeing anyone else in a Def Leppard tribute band.

That is beyond awesome!! Especially for Hysteria as Ben is incredible...very very talented and they are lucky to have him join. Dude can seriously shred...and beyond that is just the nicest, most genteel gent I think I've come across on the interwebz. Cheers to you Ben!!!

This is hilarious...and really ALL that needs to be said about ROCK ON. Ben just summed it up perfectly. Amazing. Luckily I didn't see the running time of the video before I pushed play so my initial thought was "I can't believe he's finally biting the bullet and doing this one." So when it played out like it did... Just amazing. Only thing that would top this is Vivian doing the same thing next tour.

OMG!! Too funny! Love when he throws his slippers at the end! I was going to say the same thing. His reaction is amusing enough and then you throw in these giant dog slippers being tossed at his guitar. So random.

That's freaking awesome. Is that outro different than the live versions on "In the Clubs...In Your Face", Mirrorball, Viva Hysteria, and Live From the L.A. Forum? I know it's played at a slightly different point at the end of the song, but it sounds very similar.

"I thought it would be fun to do another analysis style vid now that I've completed the main discography covers. My first 'hidden details' video was about a vocal layer in Women I suddenly began hearing one day. Since I've not had a similar experience with Hysteria, I thought it would be cool to look into the hidden details of the songs craft and why certain sections work etc. It was a lot of fun to do and quite challenging editing wise but I hope it's enjoyable and insightful to watch." by Ben (BWM5150)

Hi everyone! Some of you may know that my obsession for this band also extends into the engineering side of things too. I've read a lot of cool information over the years, regarding the making of these masterpieces, that's given me a whole new appreciation of them. You can hear why Hysteria stands out among other albums of the time but learning how they made it makes you question how they even got it finished in the first place. I hope I can share more of the cool tidbits I've read over the years so that others can appreciate the hard work that went into making these albums. This video looks at a little guitar amp called the Rock-Box, which was the secret ingredient to the clean guitar riff on Hysteria.

Hi Ben Great break down. I did a similar effort but with stand up. It's very similar to hysteria and the rhythm guitars in an animal. I'm a big fan of guitar rig. I saw a video of phil using guitar rig on his mac..
Anyway. Even though I play the 6 stringer, I'm a bassist by trade and can still not replicate Savs sound on hysteria. I
On listening to armageddon it, its definitely using a pick and heavily compressed, but i think I can hear a midi bass behind it. The standard "picked bass" in the midi selection. Thoughts? Thanks.

I believe Mike Shipley has revealed that the bass on Hysteria was handled similarly to the drums. They were both added right at the end with a Fairlight using their own samples. I don’t know how much live bass is on the record, if any, but I’m sure their samples come from live bass. I think in order to make the album sound the way it does, they needed that absolute control with pretty much every element.

Makes perfect sense. I've chatted a few times to Pete woodruff on Facebook. Hes very approachable and happy to chat about leppard in a production or engineer setting....
Thanks.

Ben, as always, this is a real treat for the mind, as well as the ears! I always learn so much from your videos, even if I forget most of it till the next time. ;-) But it always reinforces my appreciation for why I love Def Leppard, and moreover, certain songs more than others. I had an inclination that Hysteria was a bit more complex (dual guitar work hearkening back to earlier albums) and probably why I enjoy it so much...love the intricate layering of the guitars and the melodic "resolving" that happens within. Makes a lot of sense when you break it down. So cool! Any chance you might break down Photograph at some point? Or some of the other tunes from Pyro that Mutt Lange probably influenced heavily, or at least had a guiding role in making?

The rock box video is one of my favourites. I’ve heard the riffs in demos and always assumed they were edited in some way. Now having heard it through the rock box it sounds just like the demos. Great video.

Hopefully I can do more analysis style videos on certain songs like Photograph. The big tidbit about that one, which Mike Shipley has talked about, is that the chorus was changed right as they were mixing. I don't know exactly what 'changed' means in terms of whether it was altering guitar parts, or harmonies or whatever but it's an example of why Mutt liked to record the way he did so that the flexibility was always there to make things 'better'.

For any budding guitarists looking to learn the solo Steve would play before Gods of War, I’ve made a revised tutorial that I hope is as accurate as can be. There are links to the tabs in the video descriptions. Happy playing! 🙂
