String By String - A Def Leppard Recording Process? March 2017
"This is another little analysis style video I wanted to try out. I wanted to offer some info on the string by string recording process used by the band and offer some of my own opinions on why it was done and to what benefit. I've often seen this technique slated and regarded as a controversial topic so I wanted to maybe help shed some light on it. It's of course my opinion on the subject so I can't say for sure whether some points are 100% correct but I make a case for them anyway. I've used some visual elements to hopefully help explain things also! A lot of the pics I do not own the rights to. I hope you enjoy and I'll hopefully be back to some cover videos soon." bwm5150

Def Leppard - All I Want Is Everything (COVER) bwm5150
"An overdue guitar cover and well overdue Lep cover. I wasn't planning to have two analysis style vids back to back but my guitar playing has been in a bit of lull so that's why that happened. Cool parts in this track from Slang, and even with a sparse production style, I still found it hard to make everything sit tonally. I've also just realised that some of my vids that had viewing restrictions or were blocked are now seemingly fine. So my Easy Lover cover and my early Def Leppard (2015 Album) covers are okay. This may mean that I don't have to create backing tracks for the rest if it stays this way."

Give that man a PhD from the University of Lepp.
Seriously, this is a very scientific report and worthy of academic study.
It has also underlined another way to savour music: forensic listening. I have found it breathes a whole new life into long-listened-to tracks.

Def Leppard - Broke 'N' Brokenhearted (COVER) (Sped up to Standard Tuning)by bwm5150 "I noticed some of my previous covers were no longer banned in some countries so I'm testing the water with this one from the self titled 2015 album. If this is okay then I may not have to make my own backing anymore, although that was a nice challenge. Anyway, I think this is a cool, fun, straight forward song that could easily suit a live setting.
This is sped up slightly to make it in standard tuning and it's how I learned the song. Because of this though, I have ruined my perception of the original so this is now 'normal' for me. I have the original version on the way also. Apologies if this also ruins the original for you too." If this is okay then I may not have to make my own backing anymore, although that was a nice challenge. Anyway, I think this is a cool, fun, straight forward song that could easily suit a live setting. I thought I'd better do a normal speed version as well."

Def Leppard - When Love and Hate Collide Demo (COVER) "Published on May 4, 2017 I never planned on doing this one but for some reason my original cover has now been blocked worldwide (along with Rocket). Perhaps an ominous sign, perhaps not.... . Anyway, although I think it's really cool that a demo like this exists for us to listen to, I'm really pleased that it wasn't released this way. It's of course great to hear it in it's original production (although it's pretty much a Love Bites sibling with it's similar drum style, guitar solo backing etc.), and it's invaluable to be able to hear a Steve solo in a pure, unedited way. But the version from Vault is timeless to me. The production style suited its release in the mid 90's and even today I still think it sounds fresh on that front. For my personal tastes, I think Slang should've stayed closer to that style of songwriting. There's some variation to the riffs in this version but nothing major. I play the solo backing part at the end to show what it looks like and then I just play about a bit".

Def Leppard - Breathe a Sigh (Lep Cover 116/128) "Published on May 4, 2017 Real contrast in this one the way it goes from a stripped back guitar to all the sustaining and layered lines. Always difficult to pinpoint the exact parts so I just tried to do what I think sounded right. No doubt I will have mixed up some guitar lines. Also I just play on my own up to the second verse. Pretty fun to learn and I enjoyed listening to it more. I thought I would count up how many songs from the main discography I have done or at least represented in some form. 116 songs represented so far in one way or another. That includes a couple of b-sides that are on my album versions (like Me And My Wine and Kiss The Day). Of course that doesn't include duplicate live versions and other b-sides etc. Just 12 left to do and then I may venture to other rarities. Thanks for putting up with them all!"

The solo through to the end is arguably some of the best playing he has on Youtube. His improv outro is Steve incarnate. Wow.

Def Leppard - Rocket (Live Don Valley '93) COVER
"Published on May 24, 2017 "Live version from Don Valley to replace my blocked album version. I had no big intention of doing this one although I have had a couple of requests to cover the solo section which I may have got to at some point. Anyway I'm glad I did cover it as it was really fun to play and figure out the solo stuff." "Also the whole 'right hand on the neck' thing during a couple of Viv parts is just to mute the strings so the left hand can hammer on and pull off over multiple strings without creating too much noise. It helps create the Viv legato sound although my left hand needs to hit the gym to get to his level. Thought I would clear that up, although I imagine it'll still get asked about below."

Great thread. As a guitar player myself, I also always heard a combination of the two parts at the end. Funny that they are separate.
No wonder it took Mutt so long to mix Women. Makes you appreciate the art of songwriting more.

Great job as always, bwm. I knew of the GoW thing, but didn't realize it was the last chorus.
I also heard the run riot connection right away.

Def Leppard - Undefeated (Lep Cover 117/128)
"Published on Jul 5, 2017 I never really got into this song when Mirrorball came out and although it's still not a song I would pick out to listen to, it is really fun and satisfying to play with the heavy chords meshing together. Maybe that has something to do with it being in drop D tuning, well technically drop C# since we're already a half step down from standard. But yeah it's the only drop D tuning I've had to do for Def Leppard." "I've noticed live Phil still seems to be in standard and it's only Viv dropped down. That makes sense when you think about the set up changes it would require on Phil's guitar with the floating bridge as he'd have to dedicate one guitar to just this song. Viv's guitars are fixed bridge so he can tune down and back up no problem during a set."

Def Leppard - Wings of an Angel (Lep Cover 125/128)
"This has became my favourite song from the 2015 self titled album. Used to be close between this and Dangerous but this has now taken the crown. The last time I tried to upload a cover of this it was the first to be blocked properly worldwide. Then Dangerous and Let's Go followed. Almost two years later and now it seems everything but this album is getting blocked.... . Anyway, great chorus on this, cool solo too. In fact everything's just right on it, vocals drums, everything. If I could pick one Viv era song for them to play live, it would be this one! I made a video awhile back about the tuning of the verse guitar and for some reason I never came to the conclusion that it was probably a baritone guitar. Well I'll conclude now that it's probably a baritone guitar. I believe Viv also used one on Gotta Let It Go as well. I've found a way to play the verse stuff an octave higher so it sounds a little like it's a 12 string going on. " bwm5150 Def Leppard - Pearl of Euphoria (Lep Cover 126/130) "The final cut on Slang and my overdue final Slang cover. Pretty sparse this one but I imagine it would've been quite fun to write and record as it sounds like a big euphoric jam. I guess I had originally miscounted how many covers I had left to do when I first started putting up the tally but I believe 130 should be the proper amount now instead of 128. " Def Leppard - Last Dance (Lep Cover 127/130)
"Nice little acoustic track from Sav. I find it hard to take in the lyrics in songs and process them as what they mean together. To me they're normally just a bunch of melodic syllables. So I can't tell whether this song is positively reminiscent or one of regret. Anyway, I try and show the various ways you can play the main acoustic part. I imagine a 12 string may have been used for this. Cool solo also. " bwm5150 Def Leppard - Blind Faith (Lep Cover 128/130)
"What I would call their 'Sowing the Seeds of Love' song in the way Tears For Fears also tapped into that Beatles 'experimental substance' genre. Took me countless plays to get the structure and all the variations in my head but when I finally got there it became a fun song to play. Interesting progressions and ideas in there. " bwm5150

Def Leppard - Battle of My Own (Lep Cover 129/130)
"The little B section/bridge/pre-chorus or whatever in this song took me so long to figure out, but I do plan to show how I got there in another 'how to' video to finish off the first one. Anyway, I remember on first listen being very pleasantly surprised by the change into the heavy, almost 'Zeppelin' sounding end section. Never expected that. Just gives it something extra which definitely helps my listening of the song. " bwm5150

!!! Def Leppard - Kings of the World (Lep Cover 130/130) !!!
"The final cover to complete my goal of covering every song in the main back catalogue (COUGH 'From the Inside' COUGH COUGH). So if it wasn't for the recent blocks, you'd be able to find every original song, bar one, from OTTN to the 2015 self titled album represented in one way or another; whether it be album, live, demo or electric versions. I chose to finish on this one as I thought it'd be fun to try and squeeze all the vids in during the long intro which I would've normally skipped otherwise. For the song itself, originally I wasn't keen on another Queen sounding song, especially so close after the last, but over time I've come to like it a lot more along with Love. With the diversity of the last album, I now appreciate the different styles that the band have tried over the recent years. Plus I think if you end up humming or singing a song at random moments then it's done something right whether you think you like it or not. So yeah, thumbs up Sav, and if you have any more in the works like this then I'll always be willing to hear them. Thanks for all the views and comments and everything since I uploaded that first bunch of vids back in 2011. I will continue to try and expand my playing with other bands and other Leppard rarities and I hope to do more analysis style vids too. And of course more original music is in the works and I hope to share very soon." bwm5150

A couple of recent enjoyable non-Leppard covers from the best Leppard cover guy on the planet I thought I'd share. Europe's I'LL CRY FOR YOU and the Mutt co-written/produced DON'T BREAK MY HEART from Romeo's Daughter. Awesome guitar work and tone per usual! Love this - I'LL CRY FOR YOU is from Europe's Prisoners In Paradise album which I consider not only to be their best, but one of my favourite all-time albums. Great stuff.
