CLICK HERE FOR SOURCEFootage from Motley Crue's show in Kansas City, Mo. on July 19 appears to show the band utilizing a backing track for drums, as evidenced by a missed count-in to "Looks That Kill" as Tommy Lee scrambles to sit behind his kit in time.........
Loudwire reached out to a representative for Motley Crue requesting a comment/explanation for what is seen in the video. The response we received stated that the band is not currently fielding media requests.
No bueno

Personally I think Tommy is playing live, but I think that count in is triggering a load of other backing tracks including backing vocals and a guitar backing track too.
You may or may not realise it Curt but you've captured a big moment there.

I shot that video at the Kansas City show, which is funny because I meant to shoot that song in Chicago but had a brain fart and filmed (most of) "Live Wire" instead. I knew the song I wanted started with an 'L' but I wasn't paying all that much attention I guess. Perhaps it was from the insane amount of smoke I inhaled at the start of the show thanks to Motley.
So I filmed "Looks That Kill" in KC instead. I was fiddling with the zoom at the start and didn't see what happened until later that night when I was uploading the videos in my hotel room. While I thought it was quite strange, I didn't think too much of it considering how blatantly obvious it is that Crue has tapes running for backing vocals and guitar parts at the very least.
Even at my very first show in New York, I knew those things were being piped in. Most of the time, Nikki is the only one half-assed singing backing vocals, yet it still sounds like a chorus of voices coming through. There's several songs with a rhythm guitar audible under Mick Mars while he's playing a guitar solo. And at the Kansas City show, there was a moment that Nikki walked up to one of the mics on the catwalk and started shouting to the audience but the mic wasn't even on. I've seen other fans report seeing Nikki and Mick with their hands off their guitars while you can still hear bass/guitar parts being played.
If you watch other videos of "Looks That Kill" from the tour, it seems like every single one starts with Vince Neil saying "who knows this song!?" in exactly the same voice/phrasing at exactly the same spot in the song. His actual vocals are so spotty and frequently off tempo that I don't really think his main vocals are piped but perhaps some parts are? It's hard to tell.
As for Tommy, I think he is playing drums. Maybe there are drum parts on tape underneath what he's playing but he's clearly playing live. It's all a bit strange and I wasn't even trying to bring attention to it, hence me titling the video exactly the same way as all my other concert videos rather than pointing out what happened right in the title. Still, the thing has taken on a life of its own and if you're going to mess around with tapes in the era of HD smartphones, you run the risk of being busted.

Mick has always been solid, but there’s a lot going on coming from just 1 guitar. I also noticed in Chicago, he appeared to not change guitars even once…how can that be?? I get that Lep has a lot of different sounds, and Motley has fewer tones he’s going for, but only 1 guitar?? 😬

To me this is just a click track to cue up the song. A lot of groups that are using pre-recorded effects, keyboard parts on a sequencer, or have timed production cues use them. I don't see this as a big deal at all.

I believe the Leps do the same thing with Rock Of Ages and Rocket. Even the timekeeper (drummer) needs a que with songs that have intros. Action and Foolin are also songs with the prerecorded intros. Now what KISS is doing, that’s horrible. Hang it up if you’re no longer able to sing. Or, make ticket prices just enough to cover expenses for the stage crews and other employees.

I don't mind pre-recorded bits and pieces, since you can't reasonably expect a band to bring an orchestra or a bunch of utility players on the road for just one song. However, when you are lip syncing the lead vocal... you're not performing live anymore. The pop world might be accepting of that stuff, but it would be nice for the rock world to have more integrity.

Nikki is definitely not singing live. And I still don’t believe Tommy broke any ribs.

Why is this even a question? They've been using tapes for years now. I remember seeing them on the 2005 tour (Carnival of Sin?) and the running joke was what time do the Crue start? Whenever the soundman presses play on the 'tape' deck.
As for Tommy and his ribs as someone who cracked a single rib and was in agony for 6-8weeks, there's no way (painkillers or not) he could've come back so quickly after breaking four ribs. Not in my experience anyway.
However as long as the fans are enjoying the Crue, then none of this really matters. Fans going away happy is all that matters.

I've noticed it when I've seen them too, but I must admit to never seeing it in the press before, this video has shined a massive spotlight on it. Plus there could well be Leppard fans attending these shows who've never seen them before.

In Detroit, I thought my ears were bleeding the sound was so bad. I skipped the Crue portion in Cleveland (thank god) and in Cincinnati I just sneered at them the whole show. Their reactions to me were hilarious. And I was also able to judge the show better, as they had turned the bass drum down. And judge I did!!! I honestly cannot tell if they were good once. Definitely not worth the money now, when you only come to see Leppard.
