Today Joe opened his Planet Rock radio show with this: "How ya'll feeling? Well if you're feeling anything like me, you're feeling pretty good because you may already have heard, but Def Leppard have a new album out. Our first album in seven years. It's coming out on the 27th of May. It is called Diamond Star Halos. We've been sitting on it for a year because we didn't want to release it right in the middle of a pandemic, but seeing as it all seems to be clearing a little bit, we thought now is the right time, and let's be honest.... you didn't really think that I wasn't gonna play this song tonight did you?" Plays KICK. "Yes, there you go folks. The first of 15 songs that will feature on our brand new album, Diamond Star Halos, which is coming out on the 27th of May. Recorded and written 100% remotely. We weren't allowed to travel. We weren't allowed to - we didn't see each other for two and a quarter years, but we were in touch on a daily basis. Trading ideas and gathering them together in Ronan McHugh's studio, which was the central collection agency if you like. And it worked an absolute treat. We are so happy with the finished result of this record. As I said we didn't see each other for over two years until we got together very secretly in London and Cambridgeshire over the last month or so to shoot some videos for the album. The song that we just heard, the first track released. First track since 2015. The song is KICK."

I have one question. If they made this album last year, then why do we have to wait another 2 months to get it? I would’ve much rather have not known about it until the week before. I have no patience for patience. I’m sure there are going to be at least one more or two tracks released prior to it dropping. I’d expect Fire It Up probably and maybe one of the AK songs as that would drum up interest for sure. I'd bet you're definitely right about that. When you look at the vinyl on the target link (may be on others, but that's the one I know has it) it has a promo sticker on the front which says "featuring: Kick/This Guitar/Fire it Up" I'm guessing those will be the ones we hear before May 27th, maybe even that order, too.

Working with Anton Corbijn is another thing that really hints at a big budget. I’ve always wondered why they never worked with him before, even though I think Ross Halfin is great as well.

I assume this one will actually get released and not turn in to urban legend like the Target exclusive orange and yellow vinyl release of The Story So Far. savagegroove

Okay so I’ve listened to Kick probably 50+ times already (literally), and I just keep getting more and more excited for Diamond Star Halos. This is gonna be the longest 2 months to wait!! At least the release date isnt out 6 months or more like some bands do. Also, I have a question. I ordered the 2LP with the signed lithograph, but does anyone have a guess as to what the lithograph will depict? Probably the album cover art?

Seems like for U.S. fans, Target is the best deal for the CD in terms of price and getting bonus tracks. I suppose if we wait long enough, all the bonus tracks for Diamond Star Halos will be included on the Def Leppard Collection Volume 4.

Not sure what I want to buy yet. I'm leaning toward buying both the target deluxe and the regular CD. I kind of have a pet peeve against Digipaks and really despise them if I have a choice. So I want the standard release for the jewel case. However, I'm wondering if the deluxe edition will come with a colorized lyric booklet/insert? It sure look like in the target listing that the booklet/insert is colorized to match the cover. I may just make my own edition of the CD and take the CD & Booklet from the deluxe release and use the jewel case and back insert from the standard release. That way I get the best of both worlds lol. Either way, annoys me that the deluxe version doesn't just come in a jewel case like the standard version. Seems like for U.S. fans, Target is the best deal for the CD in terms of price and getting bonus tracks. I suppose if we wait long enough, all the bonus tracks for Diamond Star Halos will be included on the Def Leppard Collection Volume 4.

So far I've purchased the black vinyl with signed lithograph and the Japanese SHM-CD Regular Edition (two Japan-only bonus tracks). Will pick up the deluxe CD in Target on release day and probably the Target exclusive red and yellow vinyl. It's likely I'll buy digital on iTunes since that will become available May 26th at 11PM CT in the US. Otherwise I'll have to wait until 8AM on May 27th before I can get inside Target to buy the physical CD.

I think I'll buy the Target CD, but don't like that you can't set it for in-store pickup yet. And I don't want to have it shipped (because I'm cheap over $6, I guess). So, guess I'll wait until I can get it from Target and pick in-store pickup. 👍 I pre-ordered, but starting 2 weeks prior to release day, I plan to go in to my account daily and see if it will let me switch to in-store pick-up before it ships. I'm also cheap over $6. :-)

Mostly repeat info, but there are a couple of new quotes Def Leppard recruits Alison Krauss for new album: '(We're) her favorite band' Melissa Ruggieri, USA TODAYDef Leppard wasn’t plotting to record a full-length studio album. Nor was the band thinking about naming it after a lyric in T. Rex’s 1971 glam-rock stomper, “Bang A Gong (Get It On).” But as the enduring rockers have proven repeatedly during their 40-plus-year tenure, plans and Def Leppard are incongruous terms. On May 27, the quintet releases “Diamond Star Halos.” It’s the band’s 12th full-length album, first new material since 2015 and their inaugural effort of recording in separate corners of the globe during the early days of the pandemic. “Everyone was due to come to my studio in Dublin the day lockdown kicked in,” singer Joe Elliott tells USA TODAY in a video chat from London. “We made the decision to record remotely because we had no option. We had seven songs to start with and we wrote eight more and not once did we see each other.” Elliott is joined by bassist Rick Savage and guitarist Phil Collen as he recounts the process of fashioning the album and says that their recent media gatherings mark the first time they’ve seen each other in person in more than two years. “But we spoke on the phone more often than we have in the previous 40 years,” Elliott says. “The lines of communication were open wider. It freed us up and made us more expressive. We talked, old-fashioned on the phone, and did emails. We didn’t do Zoom once.” Savage jokes that since he and Elliott were on U.K. time and Collen, guitarist Vivian Campbell and drummer Rick Allen worked from the U.S. West Coast time zone, “while we were working, they were sleeping and while they were working we were sleeping. It’s like we were working 20 hours a day (collectively).” Among the 15 tracks on the upcoming release, led by the anthemic single “Kick,” is a pair of songs featuring Alison Krauss. As a frequent musical partner to Robert Plant, the Grammy-winning bluegrass veteran excels at hopscotching genres. “We’ve known Alison for a long time. She’s a big fan. And a lot of people don’t realize that when we worked with (producer) Mutt (Lange), a lot of the harmonies had a bit of a country tinge to them. … I was texting with Robert Plant about soccer when he asked what we were up to and he said, ‘Alison is going to love this because you’re her favorite band,’ ” Elliott recalls with a laugh. “So I texted her and asked if she fancied singing on one of our tunes and she texted me back within 30 minutes and said, ‘Oh my God, I can’t pick one; I love them both.’ So we said how about you do them both?” On “This Guitar,” which Collen wrote 17 years ago, Krauss and Elliott share vocals over pedal steel guitar and a swaying backbeat, while “Lifeless” incorporates Def Leppard’s trademark layered harmonies with a prominent assist from Krauss’ angelic voice. While the rest of the album includes sprinkles of the glam rock sound that has always pervaded Def Leppard’s music, the band didn’t write the songs on “Diamond Star Halos” with the intent to title the album as an homage to the genre. “A lot of these songs had a thread and a theme to them and we felt attached to that era that we experience together,” says Collen. “We actually use ‘diamond star halos’ as a reference to the era and we’re always saying it, so it seemed appropriate.” Adds Elliott, “It’s also an incredibly phonetic phrase. When Marc Bolan started T. Rex, he was a poet who wrote Tolkien-type stuff, but he glammed it up and started inventing words. He wrote lyrics to sound good, not read well. If you are fortunate to play in front of a stadium of people, you want the chorus to be phonetically friendly so they can all sing it. Also, it’s a lot easier to say ‘hubcap diamond star halo’ than antidisestablishmentarianism.” Def Leppard kicks off The Stadium Tour, which they're co-headlining with Motley Crue and joined by Poison and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, June 16 in Atlanta. Based on what I have read so far and what I know about Def Leppard and their recent albums, here is my guess at the songs and descriptions.
01. Take What You Want-up beat rocker, maybe like a Nine Lives type song. 02. Kick
03. Fire It Up-Another rocker, probably more melodic, typical Def Leppard that we love. 04. This Guitar [feat. Alison Krauss]-Slower song based on steel pedal guitar that has been mentioned. 05. SOS Emergency-Creative song like Gravity, Energized or Slang. This is based on the length of the song and title. 06. Liquid Dust-This will be a Paper Sun, Wings of an Angel type song. 07. U Rok Mi-Fun rocker, I feel Four Letter Word or Heaven Is 08. Good By For Good This Time-This feels like a Broke n Broken Hearted type song. Feel like it will be a faster upbeat type song. 09. All We Need-Slower mid range rocker, Animal, Tomorrow type song. 10. Open Your Eyes-This is one that I don't really have a good feel for. If I had to guess, Torn to Shreds with a Only the Good Die Young type chorus. 11. Gimme a Kiss-Another fun rocker, could be a PSSOM or Hallucinate type song. 12. Angels (Can't Help You Now)-Slow, in the vein of Blood Runs Cold or Last Dance. 13. Lifeless [feat. Alison Krauss]-More upbeat than This Guitar. Sounds like it has layered vocals, so Sea of Love? 14. Unbreakable-Harder rocker, Cry meets Invincible meets Undefeated. 15. From Here to Eternity-Epic twits and turns, Gods of War, typical epic song we all love so much! I hope it is more like GOW and less like Pearl of Euphoria.
Remember, this is just a guess based on what I have read and just having fun. Can't wait to listen and compare my notes to the actual songs.

Fun read and think I feel the same as you about many of the songs. I'm not sure about Angels (Can't Help You Now). Seems like it might be a darker type tune? Was hoping for a rocker initially but probably a ballad since Garson is involved with it. I hope you're right about Here to Eternity in that it's an epic type tune. I was picturing Blind Faith in my head initially but I'm really not a fan of that song to be honest and hope it's something like a GOW or Paper Sun as I love those tunes. All We Need I'm kind of feeling a ballad. I hope it's a mid tempo-ish, Hysteria type song though. And for Liquid Dust I'm feeling an experimental type tune....Maybe a song like Truth from Slang. I think the song I'd feel most confident about is that Fire It Up is a big time melodic rocker. I'm thinking it's probably the Dangerous of the album and can't wait to hear that one. Either way, the titles are interesting and can't wait to hear the album and see how these guesses pan out! Based on what I have read so far and what I know about Def Leppard and their recent albums, here is my guess at the songs and descriptions. 01. Thanks! And I totally agree! I could be wrong on all of them But It is still fun guessing. Also, I don't know about you, but I don't want to hear a bunch of songs before the official release. Maybe two or three, then listen to the rest when the album comes out. I am sure we will get at least one or two more songs released and that will be fun.

The three singles? Also the three songs that will be played live? Images are from the Target website. Makes sense. Also makes me wonder why a song that wasn't good enough to be on SFTSL, MB, or DL is now good enough to be a single. But time will tell. I'm also wondering if "Unbreakable" will be an early release, as it is the only song other than "Kick" that shows a download symbol in the music app on my iPhone. Doesn't work, of course, but no other songs have it. It's not uncommon on iTunes/Apple Music for songs that are next in line for release to have more info pop up before they are available. But maybe it's nothing too.

My phone has constantly shuffled around with different tracks showing as downloaded (looking at it right now it shows KICK/SOS EMERGENCY/GFGTT). I've seen this with other pre-release albums in the past, however what I've never seen and have had happen to me is the tracks were actually shuffling through as if they were being played! Last Friday I was driving and after KICK finished playing it was dead silence in my car and after a bit I looked at my dash and FROM HERE TO ETERNITY was 30 seconds into playing (of course the song was not actually playing but crazy nonetheless). I kept pushing the next track button and it shuffled through most of the tracklisting at random and made it look like it was playing all of these tracks. They announced the album 3-4 weeks sooner than the timeframe they announced self titled, so my guess (and my hope) is we will get 3-4 tracks prior to release. The beauty of a 15 song album is we can get that many and still have 11-12 new ones on the day of release. Thought that same thing about This Guitar? It was written 17 years ago but hasn't been good enough to use? Hard to believe Krauss was the missing link but I'm willing to listen with an open mind. I'm still not sure guest vocalists are needed but I think I'm more receptive to a female voice for a contrast that Tim McGraw trying to sound like Joe. I've just got my fingers crossed and am cautiously optimistic that this album will be properly "Leppardized". I mean, I keep reading about how they keep wanting to pay homage to their influences but frankly, I was never a fan of their influences. I wish they'd lighten up on talking about the influences and just say they set out to make a great Def Leppard album but I also understand they need to find inspiration however they can. It's like baking or something though. I may not like all the ingredients on their own but mixed together they make something special. That's kind of how I want my Def Leppard too....mixed together properly. They can make any song sound great if they just have big harmonies, backing vocals, layered guitars, etc. Those are the things that sets them apart from everybody else IMO. I feel like they did well with Kick though. It's a simple tune but it's catchy, fun and melodic. And while I can hear some of their influences in the song, overall it just sounds mostly like Def Leppard to me and isn't a song that sounds too much like their influences if that makes any sense (Like Man Enough or Kings of the World do to me for example). If I can have 4-5 tunes on Diamond Star Halos that kind of do the same type of thing as Kick in terms of being just "Def Leppard" sounding melodic rockers, I'll be happy. Heck, I wish I'd get a whole album of that but that's crazy talk lol. They seem intent on adding a bunch of variety and I'm fully prepared for a few head scratchers on the album. Either way, I plan to enjoy the build up and release as we never know if this could be the last full Def Leppard album. The three singles? Also the three songs that will be played live? Images are from the Target website. Makes sense. Also makes me wonder why a song that wasn't good enough to be on SFTSL, MB, or DL is now good enough to be a single. But time will tell. I’m not putting the new track in the same bracket because I haven’t heard it yet. But I don’t think it’s unusual for an idea to be shelved. Plus if this song is a bit different then it might not have fitted previous albums tonally.

My guesses were hilariously off for the 2015 album so it's worth guessing for this one to see how off I am again. Of course with some of these guesses, I hope I'm off. 01. Take What You Want - "Broke N Brokenhearted" 02. Kick - N/A 03. Fire It Up - "All Time High" 04. This Guitar [feat. Alison Krauss] - "Last Dance" w/ twang. 05. SOS Emergency - ManRaze "Get Action" 06. Liquid Dust - ManRaze "Edge Of The World" 07. U Rok Mi - ManRaze "Turn It Up" 08. Goodbye For Good This Time - DNO "Last Man Standing" 09. All We Need- "Invincible" 10. Open Your Eyes - "Forever Young" 11. Gimme a Kiss - "20th Century Boy" meets "C'mon C'mon" 12. Angels (Can't Help You Now) - DNO "Walking To Babylon" or "Let It Shine" 13. Lifeless [feat. Alison Krauss] - "We Belong" w/ twang 14. Unbreakable - "Cry" 15. From Here to Eternity - Pessimistically "Blind Faith" meets "Kings Of The World," optimistically "Scar."
