This is a fabulous interview! It was conducted while Vivian was in Boston on July 9th 2019.
Listen here beginning at 33:45:
"In this episode we are joined by Vivian Campbell of Def Leppard and Last in Line. Vivian talks about Last in Line’s recent album II, the band’s writing dynamic, the progression of the band, Phil Soussan’s style compared to Jimmy Bain’s, the name, the early vision of the band, why Andrew Freeman is the perfect vocalist for LIL, shaping the setlist with oriignals and Dio songs moving forward, working with Jeff Pilson, the plans for a 3rd album, Def Leppard’s plan for new music, the Slang time period, the upcoming Vegas residency, the idea of a Pryomania themed residency, Dave Mustaine’s r4ecent diagnosis, and a lot more."
Las Vegas Residency:
Vivian: "We're just about to start our Canadian run of shows this weekend, and we have a couple of weeks up there. I know we're leavin' it a little bit last minute, but the next couple of weeks is when we're gonna decide on what this next Vegas residency's actually gonna entail. It's gonna be a very busy couple of weeks for us. We're gonna have to do a lot of homework on days off and stuff and go in and practice and kinda work on a few tunes. There's a bit of a short list flyin' around. I can tell you there are quite a few songs on there that we haven't played in many, many, many years. So, everyone has been given their homework.... I've got my guitar with me and I've got an email with a bunch of songs."
When it comes to songs you haven't played in a long time, do all 5 of you throw in ideas or how does that come about?
Vivian: "Yeah, we do. We have discussions about it. I gotta say, though, Joe is always and has always been the heart of the band. And Joe really thinks these things through. He always has great suggestions about what we should be playing and why we should be playing them. It's one thing for any of us to think of a song from an earlier album and say 'let's play that', but it's easier said than done. Joe usually manages to have a clear-cut, logical reason for playing a particular song, and that makes a lot of sense. He always tries to think of it as a show. That's why he's a lead singer. He has that thought process with him. He kinda thinks it through because he knows he's gonna be the guy singing it and he's gonna be the guy talkin' in between. It has to make sense to him. If it makes sense to him, it'll make sense to the rest of us."
