Episode 5 - Brian Johnson and Joe Elliott (Friday, May 26)Brian travels Dublin to meet his old pal Joe Elliott of DEF LEPPARD. They hook up in the Temple Bar district and Joe takes Brian to his local pub, The Porterhouse. Joe tells Brian about DEF LEPPARD's backstory and their rise to success â one of a bunch of ordinary lads from Sheffield who loved T.REX, MOTT THE HOOPLE, QUEEN and THIN LIZZY as well as heavier rock artists and went against the current music trends to spearhead what became known as the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. They talk in detail about the "Pyromania" and "Hysteria" tours and the tragedies that befell the band along the way: the sacking of guitarist Pete Willis (for uncontrollable behavior), drummer Rick Allen's car accident in which he lost his left arm, and the death from alcohol abuse of guitarist Steve Clark. Joe then recounts some of the unique moments on those tours â the concept of playing in the round and being smuggled on stage in laundry baskets (once by Robert Plant!); the day in 1995 when they played three gigs on three continents and took their place in the Guinness Book of Records; the Las Vegas residency at the Hard Rock Hotel where they supported themselves (in disguise!); and the recent "Hysteria" cruise. They finish up by covering aspects of Joe's career after the DEF LEPPARD glory years and some of his various side projects, and they look forward as the band gear up for a major North American tour beginning in 2017. source

Watching this right now, excellent so far, starting off talking about the bands early days. Also included are interviews with a journalist too with his recollections of the band. Oh and to top it off viva hysteria is on afterwards It wouldn't surprise me if this is subtitled for everywhere else except the UK because of Brian's accent.

In fact it's more than just talking about the tours, its Joe's talking about the bands history.

Ok so it was potted history of the band. Joe talks about all the key events in the bands history, with the odd separate input from a famous uk rock journalist. Lots of song clips and live video stuff, most of it is readily available. The rarest stuff Is a good quality clip of Rick in the rehearsal studio in 87 and some footage of the London 95 3 continents gig. They then jump from 3 continents in one day to gloss over the 90s and 2000s to talk about Viva Hysteria and then joe talks about the cruise and his voice problems. Brian doesn't really say much as he let's joe talk but it's clear they are good friends, summed up perfectly by Brian's speech to Joe at the end.
Joe reiterates a lot of the anecdotes we regularly hear from him in other interviews.
A few key points I guess. He's very firm about it not being their job to educate people at a live show and they don't cater for the 1% who want rare stuff, but will indulge them every 30 mins or so at a gig. He talks about how they were very aware of the spinal tap potential of the hysteria tour curtain and he claimed they only failed twice on the tour. He clearly loved the hysteria in the round tour but said they were done with it halfway through the adrenalize tour. A final comment on Steve was it's a tragic story but sadly not a unique one. The 90's and 2000's were like they were flying through turbulence but they knew there would be blue sky at the end of it.
All in all very good to watch. It's basically a compilation of all Joe's anecdotes about key events in the bands history in one interview.
Kept the channel on to watch Viva Hysteria. My sister text to tell me it's on, then my dad called to tell me it was on. He hasn't seen Joe Elliott for years and commented on how much he'd changed and said he still just about gets there with his voice though.

Enjoyed this programme, but then I could listen to Joe rambling on all day !! I noticed that he said they would never do a cruise again, and I assume that they wouldn't tour in the round again as they struggled with it on the Adrenalize tour when they were younger and fitter. A very good watch if you get the chance.

It was a good watch, although as other contributors have said, if you're a long-time fan than there's not much there you won't already know. Indeed, I transferred it onto one of my other Leppard discs and in the process skimmed through Joe's 2006 interview with Dave Fanning, and most of the anecdotes were the same. However, in fairness, a drawback of liking a band for a long time is that there inevitably comes a point where you have heard every story and no matter what the band member tries to say, you'll already know it and can probably finish their sentences for them!
The one point that caught my eye - admittedly minor, but I'll take it - was that the Westfield School gig actually didn't go very well until the encore when they played a Thin Lizzy song. Even then, the encore was contrived and demanded by some friends who came along rather than the actual audience! I didn't know that, or at least if I have read it in an unofficial biography then I'd long since forgotten. My knowledge of it is all from David Fricke describing it as "a memorable beginning" and implying that the "real" audience wanted more!

This was an absolutely fantastic interview, You can see the mutual respect they have for each other. I like how Joe still defends steve and the way he died. The ending was hilarious. Thanks for posting CindyJEdit: I forgot the bit about the cruise was hilarious considering the way it played out. RIP Jimmy I think it might have been the best decision as fan not to go...i even had free VIP Upgrades offered to me. My goal now and in the future is to see them doing unique shows when i can .... likely in europe ....

Loved the interview, you always learn tidbits that no one would know. I find I could listen to Def Leppard interviews always, if they would do more of them.

The Joe Elliott episode of BRIAN JOHNSON'S A LIFE ON THE ROAD has been removed from Vimeo, but if you live in the US and have AXS TV, you'll have another opportunity to watch it: AXS TV Acquires Series by AC/DC Frontman Brian Johnson (EXCLUSIVE)AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson is bringing his rock-themed talk show to the U.S. âBrian Johnson: A Life On The Road,â which aired in the U.K. on Sky Arts, will premiere Sept. 15 on AXS TV, following new music series âPaul Shaffer Plus One,â hosted by the musician and television personality. AXS acquired two seasons of âA Life On The Roadâ from Eagle Rock Entertainment, totaling 12 episodes in which Johnson talks shop with musician âfriends and heroes.â Said Johnson in making the announcement: âFilming âOn The Roadâ was ridiculous fun, and with no professional journalists around, you can feel the trust.â Kicking off the series is Sting, whom Johnson visits in New York. The two venture towards downtown Manhattan to the former location of punk club CBGB, where The Police played their first U.S. gig. Stunned by the gentrification of the area, Sting recalls CBâs being âkind of a spooky place⌠it was so full of history.â Other artists to sit and chat with Johnson this season include Robert Plant (Sept. 22); The Whoâs Roger Daltrey (Sept. 29); Def Leppardâs Joe Elliott (Oct. 6); Metallicaâs Lars Ulrich (Oct. 13); and Pink Floydâs Nick Mason(Oct. 20). Scheduled to appear in season two are Billy Joel (Oct. 27); Joe Walsh (Nov. 3); Dolly Parton (Nov. 10); Dire Straitsâ Mark Knopfler (Nov. 17); Paul Rodgers (Nov. 24); and Fleetwood Macâs Mick Fleetwood (Dec. 1).Said Lucia McCalmont, the networkâs vice president of programming and scheduling: âAXS TV strives to provide our classic rock audience with the absolute best music programming on the market today, and we are proud to continue that strong tradition with the addition of âBrian Johnson: A Life On The Road.â For the first time ever, North American audiences will be able to experience these unforgettable episodes in their entirety, as rockâs greatest artists guide viewers on a tour of the locations that helped shape their legacies, and share the stories of their incredible careers in their own words. True music connoisseurs wonât want to miss this incredible event.â Source
