EXCLUSIVE: DOWN N OUTZ DIARY PT1 Posted by simon On December - 5 - 2014He’s back by popular demand and bound to raise a chuckle – Paul Guerin has returned to diary duties as the Down N Outz head out on their UK headline tour. Doubling up as a Quireboy – with DnO band mates Keith Weir and Guy Griffin – Paul penned a series of fascinating pieces during his time touring the USA this summer. And as a busy 2014 draws to a close he’s back to bring RUSHONROCK readers more exclusive insights from life on the road. The Quireboys’ 2014 Black Eyed Sons world tour finally wound down on a breezy Sunday night in Bristol Thekla – after we visited many, many countries, travelled tens of thousands of miles, made countless flights and played to thousands of happy punters.
Well, at least we would get a rest now…oh, hang on, no we won’t!
At 9.30am Monday morning we were loading into Factory Studios in Bristol ready to start Down N Outz rehearsals…no rest for the wicked as they say!
Share Ross landed at Heathrow at 8.45am so it was gonna be a long day for her – Wolfie and Anto (Def Leppard techs) were picking her up and Joe was driving over from Dublin with Sinead Madden (production manager and amazing violin player).
We finally got round to playing early evening and the band was instantly on fire – you would think Share had been playing with us for years. This gig was always about doing your homework and being ready to go: everyone had and they were!
We had four days in the studio and it was a blast (even though a few members of the band are down with the flu) – only taking time out to sign and sort out our pretty amazing merchandise.
We have a set of 18 songs and it’s a belter (no Def Leppard or Quireboys so please don’t be shouting out for them).
The first show’s at Bristol Bierkeller tonight. Trish, my wife, will be selling the merch on the tour and I do believe she may be sporting the famous Booty Reuben’s hat…watch this space.
Blyth Spartans’ match on the telly before we go on so let’s hope we win ha ha!!Source

EXCLUSIVE: DOWN N OUTZ DIARY PT2 Posted by simon On December - 11 - 2014The Down N Outz are bringing Ian Hunter’s glory days back to life across the UK this month. And guitarist Paul Guerin is bringing RUSHONROCK readers bang up to date with life on the road as he reprises his role as our favourite diarist. Back by popular demand after delighting our readers with tales of the Quireboys’ US tour, Blyth’s finest is bang in form. Look out for more right here soon! We had a night off in London and we were staying in the Angel so I decided to take a little trip down memory lane and take Trish for a drink at the legendary Philthy McNasty’s.
Myself, Keith and Bap Kennedy used to play there every Sunday with various members of the Pogues sitting in with us. Many an hour was spent with David Soul there shooting the breeze telling us all Huggy Bear stories…priceless! ,
So imagine my horror when we pitch up to find it has been closed down – like too many pubs in England. Such a rich history sitting gathering dust now.
The London show is at the Garage, Highbury corner and I remember being filmed there 25 years ago by Krusher. Time doesn’t half fly…
Playing London is always great as I get to catch up with friends that I rarely see since I left the Big Smoke. The gig was packed and I was really happy with the sound on stage. The only bummer with these shows is that security turfs everyone out as soon as the gig finishes which means we don’t get a chance to go out and meet the fans but there’s nowt we can do about it…sorry.
An early start and off to York we go. Because we have a trailer we can’t go over 60 mph which is a bit of a drag – York is a beautiful city and it’s a shame we don’t have more time as I would have loved to take our American friends – Share and Wolffy – on a little sightseeing trip. But as usual the clock isn’t our friend.
Vega – our opening band – don’t get a sound check tonight due to a few technical glitches which makes me feel quite bad, especially as it’s their hometown gig.
But being the troopers they are it doesn’t faze them and they sound superb as always.
This is the new Fibbers and it’s a great venue. It was a little cramped on stage but what the hell – we still had a blast and the real ‘Brucey Bonus’ was the hotel was directly over the road from the gig so we all debunked back to the hotel bar until the early hours…top night! Source

Even if that's true, surely he hired a driver.

The first band I ever saw when I was 11 was Slade and after witnessing that glam rock extravaganza I had to have a guitar – thus setting me on the path which brings myself and my fellow Down N Outz to Wolverhampton’s Slade Rooms tonight.
I’m not sure if Noddy and the boys have ever actually been in there but there are some brilliant photos of them from their heyday all over the walls.
Joe says he’s feeling a little better tonight so hopefully his virus/flu thingy may be on its way out. Tonight’s stage is probably the smallest on the tour so I felt a little hemmed in but apart from that I had a great gig and the crowd were brilliant…who says rock is dead?!! Bah humbug to them.
Show over and it’s back to the hotel where we mingled with works do party goers all off their heads – didn’t see many of them at breakfast ha ha. But Keith sat at the next table to Julian Clary who is playing Cinderela in panto…it’s a strange life we lead.
Newcastle here we come!Source

I said in another thread that Joe doesn't have to do this tour. Its not a massive money maker. So fair play to him for him for getting out there for the love of the music and the band.

I totally agree...by the time everyone gets a cut i doubt any money was made on this tour.. i bet the goal was to cover expenses. Add up the amount of crew and band members plus opening band... production costs.... you're talking big money to keep this thing on the road for 2 weeks. But when you're worth millions and love the music as much as Joe does i doubt he cares what it costs. He seems truly happy when he gets to play this stuff in front of new audiences.

I'm pretty sure that the tour is breaking even. Joe joked about earning £20 last week. It's a Busmans Holiday for him and the look on his face at points during the DnO gigs will tell you it's more than worth it for him even if it wasn't breaking even.

Back by popular demand after delighting our readers with tales of the Quireboys’ US tour, Blyth’s finest is bang in form. Look out for more right here soon! We arrived in Newcastle and booked into our hotel – The Sandman Signature. It’s a beautiful hotel but the real beauty is the view from my bedroom window…St James’s Park in all it’s glory!
To those who don’t know, St James’s Park is the home of Newcastle United Football Club. I was born 15 miles from here so it’s always special coming home to play.
There used to be a club in Newcastle called the Mayfair which was situated not two minutes walk from the hotel. Well the car park at the back of the Mayfair was where I first met Joe Elliott.
Def Leppard were opening up for AC/DC but the club had gone on fire and the crew were trying to get the gear out and I spotted Joe. So I went and had a good old chat with him who would have thought 35 years later I would be in a band with him!
It was a night off so both band and crew headed out for an Indian meal. We also have Campbell Devine and his brother Billy with us. Campbell is a very interesting character: he is a Mott The Hoople historian so you can imagine what great stories he has.
Trish was leaving after the Newcastle show so everyone is sad to see her go, she’s done an amazing job on the merch so after dinner we head down the Bigg Market to sink a few frothies then back to the hotel for a room party..so much for an early night ha ha!Source

EXCLUSIVE: DOWN N OUTZ DIARY PT5 Posted by simon On December - 21 - 2014The Down N Outz are bringing Ian Hunter’s glory days back to life across the UK this month. Back by popular demand after delighting our readers with tales of the Quireboys’ US tour, Blyth’s finest is bang in form. Look out for more right here soon! It was the day of the Newcastle show and a gig I’d been looking forward to for some time.
As per usual our crew have to go the venue early to set the equipment up and basically do everything that is necessary to make the show happen this evening.
I don’t really think people really grasp how much hard work goes on behind the scenes to get this show on the road so I want to show big respect and say thank you to our amazing crew…Sinead Madden (tour manager), Ronan McHugh (sound technician), David Wolff (back line tech), Anto Byrne (back line tech/ driver) and not forgetting Patricia Guerin (merch).
All these guys, apart from Patricia, are Def Leppard crew so you know they are the cream of the crop and they sure do make our lives a hell of a lot easier.
Newcastle Riverside is a great venue set on the banks of the river Tyne in the shadow of the mighty Tyne Bridge. It’s a terrific setting and a homecoming gig for me.
Normally I would nip out and see friends before the show but I was having real problems with my broken finger. I thought it best just to stay out of the way and spend a few hours warming up. I’m pleased I did as it really helped when we hit the stage.
The Geordie crowd were well up for it so I knew it was gonna be a party. The set went well and Joe’s banter with the crowd was mighty. The highlight of the gig every night for me is when Sinead Madden joins us onstage to play violin on Violence (she played on the album too). Sinead whips up a storm and then were off – back on for England Rocks and Good Times then it was away upstairs with some friends and family for a few bevies…good times indeed!Source

Back by popular demand after delighting our readers with tales of the Quireboys’ US tour, Blyth’s finest is bang in form. Look out for more right here soon! I love coming to Glasgow, the city , the people ,the banter. I have many great memories of playing here especially in 2002 when I was part of the house band at the Frankie Miller tribute night: myself, Brian Robertson, Joe Walsh, Ted McKenna, Hugh McKenna, Chrissy Stewart…what a band. The Quireboys meets the Eagles meets S.A.H.B. Just wonderful.
We were at the Glasgow Garage – a fantastic venue run by our pal Donald McCloud from the clan McCloud. I was there two weeks ago with the Quireboys and it was an incredible night so I was hoping it was gonna go just as well with Down N Outz.
As usual me and Griff nipped next door for noodles at the noodle house. We’ve been going there for years and you’ve got to keep traditions alive!
Vega went on and as usual pulled off a blistering set. Then we were up to the podium, the crowd reaction was amazing and Joe was visibly moved by the warmth of the audience.
I had nothing to worry about: Glasgow was on fire and I loved every moment of it. Ted Mckenna and Chris Glen were in the audience which was an egg boiler for me n Joe as we are both huge S.A.H.B fans. As usual the gig whizzed by too quickly for me. I always wish we could play all bloody night!
A few drinks after the show with some old and dear friends and then an early start in the morning. We were just hoping the ferry crossing wasn’t too choppy…PG * This diary entry was submitted before the tragic events that took place in Glasgow city centre earlier this week. RUSHONROCK, Paul Guerin and the Down N Outz would like to offer their sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who tragically passed away. We are thinking of everyone involved and affected. Source

Back by popular demand after delighting our readers with tales of the Quireboys’ US tour, Blyth’s finest is bang in form with his penultimate entry charting a fabulous tour. Another early start and we were on our way to the ferry. We were expecting a bumpy old crossing en route to Belfast but it was fine so I settled myself into the cinema to watch Hercules and of course…fell asleep!
A typical travel day then and so not much to report apart from the atrocious weather when we got to Belfast. Fortunately it was an easy night in watching the Stones in Hyde park DVD.
The venue in Belfast was another venue the Quireboys were at three weeks earlier and what a cracking venue the Limelight is. The dressing rooms are first class and we are always looked after very well. Keith’s mam and brothers and a bunch of old friends were at the show and it was great to see them. The place was packed and Vega put on a blinding show as always.
As an added bonus Vivian Campbell sent a message to Joe before the show to say hello to the audience and to tell them he’s doing well.
The shows went great and we changed England Rocks to Belfast Rocks which brought a smile to a lot of faces.
After a few drinks with friends and family in the dressing room it was back to Dublin which unfortunately was the last show of the tour…toodalooo Belfast! See you again soon I hope.Source

And guitarist Paul Guerin agreed to keep RUSHONROCK readers bang up to date with life on the road as he reprised his role as our favourite diarist. Back by popular demand after delighting our readers with tales of the Quireboys’ US tour, Blyth’s finest is bang in form with the final entry charting a fabulous tour. It was the last date on the Down N Outz tour. It’s been a long haul – especially coming straight off the Quireboys’ tour – but what an amazing year it’s been!
Countless countries, flights, hotels, long drives, late nights early mornings. But above all amazing audiences.
The most worthwhile thing about this bohemian lifestyle is no matter where we go people still love and believe in rock n roll and are not prepared to let it die. That still humbles me.
We were staying at Joe's so it was a pretty easy trip to the gig. Or so we thought!
The traffic was mental so by the time we got to sound check we were running a bit late. We blasted through sound check to make sure Vega got a good crack at things. We made up time so all was well.
I was due to be filmed for a Joe Elliott ‘Icons’ show that will be broadcast in a few months’ time on VH1. It all went well, well I think it did – but let’s see how it’s edited ha ha!
Vega set the bar high so we had to step up to the mark and we did. It was a terrific gig even though Joe was still suffering with his flu (which later turns out to be pneumonia). It didn’t stop him and the rest of the band going out on a high.
We had a cab coming at 6am to take us to the airport but it didn’t stop us debunking to Lilly’s Bordello for an end of tour frothy quencher bonanza – band, family, friends and fans alike mingled, slurped and chatted into the early hours. It was a brilliant tour and it was an amazing opportunity to play these songs and do something to bring this music back to people’s notice.
6am came around far to quickly for my liking…I was just praying Ryan Air would be gentle with me…Source

For this Rock Icons show I hope they utilise some Leps live footage to offset how ill Joe sounded at the DnO shows.
