m.yorkshirepost.co.uk/yorkshire-living/arts/music/band-relives-days-of-eighties-hysteria-on-film-in-las-vegas-1-6205256If you were around in 1987 it was hard to miss Sheffield rockers Def Leppard as their album Hysteria soared up the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. But such immense success can be a double-edged sword and, as the band’s appeal waned, so they had to fight off calls to perform the album live in their concerts. All that changed when they accepted a residency at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. Nine shows quickly sold out. Two more were added. And to give the band the chance to explore their back catalogue they created a faux tribute act, Ded Flatbird, aka themselves in disguise, which opened the first half of the concert. Vocalist Joe Elliott was back in Sheffield earlier this month for a preview of Def Leppard Viva! HYSTERIA, a new film of the Vegas shows. He recalled how acts like The Who and Elton John had made it cool for Leppard to follow suit. "For years we turned down doing Hysteria. They'd always asked when we were promoting another record. We just knew that the albatross that it is would overshadow any new work. We weren't going to play an entire version of an album that is obviously our most commercial record ever because then people would forget that we had a new record out. So we always said no. So the fact that they actually asked for Hysteria was one of the reasons that we ended up saying yes. We would have gone to Dubai, it could have been New York, but residencies only seem to happen in Vegas. Or maybe Blackpool. But they didn't ask so they didn't get it." Spoofing themselves in Ded Flatbird Elliott renamed himself Booty Reuben by stealing random words from the covers of Rolling Stone magazines allowed the Leppard quintet to drift back over its 30-plus-years history. We opened the first night of the 11 shows with Good Morning Freedom. It's the B-side of Hello America. We haven't played it live in 33 years. We dug so deep into the back catalogue, hardly played any of the hits." How did the fans react? "People started buying into it. And we'd do all these crazy songs that half the audience had been crying out for. The thing about our setlist is that the people that moan and groan are such a minority in a crowd that they are only a majority on a website or a forum."ÂÂHaving completed half of the gig as doppelgangers Ded Flatbird, Elliott and his bandmates took the stage again as Def Leppard. That's when the standards appeared songs like Animal and Pour Some Sugar on Me. Songs they can play in their sleep. Is it difficult not to become complacent? "Complacency is something that's never, ever happened to us" says Elliott flatly. "We've all got too much respect for each other. So you bust your chops every night you go out there and you bleed for every chord. All I am interested in is when I say Guys! I've had this great idea!If their eyes light up and their creative spark is banging off in a room its like being 16 still." So, still 16 at heart? Elliott smiles. "Oh, full on. Full on." Def Leppard VIVA! Hysteria is on DVD now.

Quote from Joe Elliott The thing about our setlist is that the people that moan and groan are such a minority in a crowd that they are only a majority on a website or a forum.I'm not sure how to take that quote but it sounds like Joe is underestimating the power of social networking in 2013. Fans want variety. Roughly 30 thousand fans just travelled to see the band perform special set lists. That says it all. Numbers are down from regular touring for a reason.... the lack of variety.... invest in the set list... not the ramp or lights or screenss etc etc... Comments like that show how out of touch he is with the fan base if he thinks touring the same hits year after year isn't an issue with fans. Fans that get bored stop buying tickets and promoters stop offering tours. My hope is that the 2014 Tour evolves into something that is fresh and celebrates all of their catalog. I would hate to see them play out their final years playing the same 16 songs on a regular touring cycle. It worries me that nothing will change next year. But i remain optimistic that they will deliver for all level of fans. Fingers crossed

Not to mention just because I'm complaining about it on a social network or forum doesn't mean I'm not going to two, three, or four shows per tour. I get the impression he thinks the only ones complaining are people reading the sets online and not going to shows. Meanwhile everyone at the show is happy. As if it's two completely separate groups with no overlap.
Which is wrong.
They got less of my money in 2012 directly because of what they did in 2011.

Im in agreement with turn to dust here ive been to 50 shows now but i gave 2012 a miss im afraid, We live in tough times econonmically and i cant justify a £100 pound plus trip for me and my partner to watch a replay of the same show weve seen umpteen times before. Thats what made vegas stand out so much ill be honest ive been playing disc 2 of viva to death and hardly bothered with disc one. The setlist needs more surprises not just a greatest hits retread

I have no problem boycotting a tour if they bring the same GH setlist to the stage again i've done it before and i'll do it again. Money has never been an issue for me and attending shows but paying for the same songs is an issue. Would you pay to see the same movie over and over again? i'll pay top $$$ if the product is fresh and entertaining but i refuse to encourage them to bring the same thing to the stage again. 2013 has been such a massive year for the band and set lists i think it would be a huge mistake for them to tour next year and not build on this year. Imagine buying tickets to next years tour and get the greatest hits set list again..... no thanks

Went to the Canandaigua show this past year with high expectations of hearing something fresh with them coming off what they had done in Vegas...And was pretty let down when it ended up being just another 15 song greatest hits set...Although, the show was at least saved a little with them playing Don't Shoot Shotgun....Overall though, the setlist was much weaker than the 2012 setlist for whatever reason. What percentage of people attending a Def Leppard show these days do you think has seen them before? My guess is that even a fairly conservative estimate would be 75%.....And probably half of the 25% that is in attendance and hasn't seem them doesn't really care what they play because they just tagged along with somebody.... I have skipped some opportunities in the past to see them when they've come around...But at this point, who knows how many more opportunities I'll have to see them? I really don't know if I can skip a show when it's 20 minutes from my house...So I'll probably keep going and hope to see at least one song in the set that I haven't seen before.... But they need to bring something fresh to the table and more importantly, have something to bill. I don't want to see another tour with it being called "Def Leppard Summer Tour 2014". It honestly wouldn't take much of an effort on their part to mix it up. Add a New Song, maybe rotate a different song into the encore and a new opening song and boom a fresh show well at least for the fans. I would pay to see that with a few small changes..... in all honesty 2012 was a good start. 2013 was a dream year....I have hope they will listen to the fans. It does make me laugh when Joe brings up social netwoking sites in interviews yet he says we aren't the majority..... but we are still worth mentioning every time he gets asked a set list question. You make noise you get heard..... the fans have a voice. it wouldn't be so frustrating if we didn't care .... i'm not complaining for fun it's because i want the band to put on a fresh show every tour.

Such an emotive subject made worse when joe has a dig at fans. I don't understand why he does it really. Most of those fans are the ones who have supported the band through thick and thin.
It just shows fans care and have an affinity with the bands whole catalogue.

Sadly I never got ahold of one. After 2011 I should have gotten one made that had the Dorito Chip in the Hysteria triangle like my old avatar to wear to shows.
I promptly would have eaten that shirt on stage in Vegas this year. ;D

And getting no new music either. The VH blueray was nice, but massive year? Not even close for me. On top of that Joe Elliott continues to be just as **** and arrogant as ever. If they were just a little bit more clever they would've had a much bigger audience (concerning both shows and CDs) still to this day. But no...
