Def Leppard Frontman Talks 30th Anniversary of "Pyromania"

This year marks the 30th anniversary for "Pyromania," the Def Leppard breakthrough album that sold more than 10 million copies in the U.S. and launched hits such as "Photograph," "Rock of Ages," "Foolin'" and "Too Late For Love."
But frontman Joe Elliott says we shouldn't expect much celebration of the mark from the band:
“We ignored the 30 year anniversary because I think a lot of these anniversaries are just invented by the record companies...to re-release an album that doesn't need re-releasing because it's never been deleted. And we did agree to doing the 25th anniversary of 'Pyromania' five years ago where we put out the second disc, which was the 'Live at the L.A. Forum,' basically an extra live album...The cupboard's bare. There's nothing left. They wanted to do a 30th anniversary re-release of 'Pyromania' and we just said absolutely not...If somebody wants 'Pyromania Deluxe,' it's already out there. We celebrated after 25 years. We don't need to do it again after 30.”
Nevertheless, Elliott says Def Leppard still has fond memories of the album, not just because of the music but also because it helped to bring female fans into the hard rock/metal fold in numbers the genre had never seen before:
“It was like we were the Duran Duran of hard rock. It was crazy, really. But, you know, it is very gratifying to think (that) if you're gonna be in a band, you want what you do to touch people. You want it to leave an impact...We were just, like, the logical next generation of kids that was gonna be doing it for our generation of kids...And to know that for our generation in the early 80s, the mid 80s, we did it twice, because with 'Pyromania' it was success, with 'Hysteria' it was twice the success.”
Def Leppard is currently taking time off but is also working on material for a new album.
"Def Leppard Viva! Hysteria Concert" from its spring stand at the Hard Rock Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas will be shown in movie theaters October 2 and 8 before being released on DVD, Blu-ray and CD.
