I was referring to how Lep sounded (will sound) I think we’ll have to live with what’s out for a while longer. Obviously, other signs have pointed to This Guitar, but I struggle with seeing it just yet. Maybe after the tour starts and fantastic reviews start pouring in and they shift a few albums. I’m highly skeptical with getting fantastic reviews with Motley on the tour. I’m afraid they are going to drag the tour down.

I finally have my deluxe and Japanese release CDs as well as the regular and picture disc vinyl. I do like the bonus tracks. It's amazing how much Alison Krauss' vocals add to Lifeless and This Guitar. For me, those two songs are good on their own but get elevated with her vocals added. Goodbye for Good This Time (Avant-Guard Mix) sounds great to me. But I like that kind of piano work. Angels sounds good pared back. I assume it's a demo or very early version. I do prefer the final album version.

I would currently plug DSH in fourth after HYSTERIA/PYRO/SLANG. It's early yet though. Each of the last 3 albums unfortunately dropped quite a bit for me as the new material shades were taken off, so it'll be interesting where I sit with it in a year. With that said, I don't remember how long I listened to the recent albums before moving off of them, but I am still listening to this album almost 3 weeks later 2-3 times a day. I have been thinking about that too. Hysteria Diamond Star Halos Slang Pyromania Def Leppard High n Dry Adrenalize Euphoria Retroactive SFTSL X OTTN Yeah I can thoroughly enjoy everything from SFTSL upwards. X down, not quite as much. I am trying to think where I would have ranked DL in 2015. Maybe something like: Hysteria Pyromania Def Leppard Slang With that said, I don't remember how long I listened to the recent albums before moving off of them, but I am still listening to this album almost 3 weeks later 2-3 times a day. LOL, you beat me too it So obviously I might look back in a few years and wonder why I had DSH so high. The thing is, I am pretty sure I have listened to DSH a HUGE amount more than I did with Def Leppard at this point after it's release. Or any album since perhaps Adrenalize (maybe Euphoria but I don't think so). I know it goes in different directions, but while I was walking the dog this evening while listening, I was just thinking that there is not one single song that I skip on this album. Immediately with DL, there were a couple, but not DSH. All We Need is possibly the weakest song on the album for me, but even that is still such a great uplifting and enjoyable song. Right now, I feel like nothing will knock Hysteria off the top, ever. But I can't see any future release beating DSH, it is just that good.

Def Leppard: We’ll still be rocking in 2035
Def Leppard have been rocking out for 45 years and have more than 100 million album sales under their belts, but they are adamant that no farewell tours are on the horizon.
The band from Sheffield, England were one of the biggest players in the big-hair, big-riffs heyday of 1980s stadium rock.
Their back-to-back albums “Pyromania” and “Hysteria” both sold more than 10 million copies in the United States alone, one of only five rock bands in history to do so.
Now in their sixties, they have certainly earned their stripes in rock lore: surviving the loss of their guitarist Steve Clark to an overdose in the early 1990s, and drummer Rick Allen carrying on despite losing an arm in a car accident in 1984.
“We always joked that farewell tours are a way of saying that your ticket sales suck. We’re very fortunate that we haven’t had to do that,” singer Joe Elliott told AFP.
“The Scorpions have been on a farewell tour for, like, 14 years, Cher’s been on one for about 20... Sinatra did five of them,” he said with a laugh.
“But we’ve never taken any time off. If we were off the road, we were making an album.”
The jovial singer, still rocking the long hair and sporting a pair of blue-tinted sunglasses, knows it can’t last forever.
But he sees no reason the band’s journey can’t “stretch until 2035 when we’re the same age as The Rolling Stones are now.”
Def Leppard are back on the road this summer with fellow rock veterans Motley Crue, Poison and Joan Jett.
They have also just released 12th studio album “Diamond Star Halos,” their first in seven years, which they pieced together during the pandemic despite the five members being spread across England, Ireland and the U.S.
The new songs see the band try to step away from the “albatross” of Hysteria, said Elliot, experimenting with piano, flamenco guitar and glam rock.
“We’re back to the roots of what got us into music, not back to ourselves,” Elliott said.
“On this record we were coming up with ideas that sounded like Bowie or Elton John, or Queen and Zeppelin. All the things that we listened to growing up are leaking in, which it always has, but we didn’t block it this time.”
Elliott says the pandemic, which forced them to put their songs together remotely, was a gift.
“When you put four or five alpha males in one room with new songs it becomes a little competitive. This was psychologically completely different.
“The pandemic opened our minds. We thought: ’We’ve got this time, let’s do something creative and put no blocks on anything.’”
The band had no record deal when they began the project (it was ultimately released by Universal) and found that open-ended process liberating.
“For a band that made Hysteria 35 years ago, this is a fantastic statement. Any fans that bought that album, the ones that aren’t dead, are ready for the next stage of the journey.
“We want to be able to expand our horizons. Nothing is off the table, everything is invited into the party.”

My opinion on this record was already very high, and it keeps getting better. Recently, I’ve been reallllly listening to From Here To Eternity. What an incredible track. Slow burning and addicting

Just popping in again to say that this album is seeming to appeal to my age group again like the last record that came out when I was 18. I went to a house party a few nights ago and the host (who is a few years younger than me) had some songs from DSH on his personal apple music playlist blasting during the party. I got so excited lol I asked if he listens to DL a lot, but he said no (most of his playlist was rap/modern country), but that he heard enough of the new album and saw ads everywhere so he checked it out! Very cool🤘🏻

GFGTT is the eighth track on Diamond Star Halos. It is maybe my favourite, and with that, a top 10 all time Def Leppard track.
One thing that I had read out there, which really surprised me, is an accusation of "syrupy" ballads on this album. I don't see it personally. This isn't a sweet song, and seems quite stripped back actually compared to the complexity of something like HYENSSB from Adrenalize. Here, piano leads us off, then an additional of strings (with a little flurry) before we hit the first verse almost immediately, just 12 seconds into the song. No messing around. The verse is delivered in a low register, but with a couple of steps up as the verse progresses.
Then, no chorus, straight into the second verse and the climb in the register of the vocals continues.
Where does the future lie In this godforsaken place? The heart has a dark devotion and it breaks you leaving no trace
This is a great example of what Def Leppard do so well, build up the song and use different structures, and it continues through the 2nd verse. We then hit the chorus. This is one of the first peaks in the song where the build up reaches a crescendo, with the delivery of:
It's goodbye for good this time As love lies broken in two (ah-ah)
This sounds like the vocals recorded twice and played over the top of each other to add strength and urgency to the lines. Then you have the rest of the band adding harmonies in the "ah ah"'s. All the while, you get the piano underneath with plenty of flourishes which adds interest and depth, but is not loud enough to distract from the progress of the song.
The solo is nylon-stringed, although this doesn't feel anything like Two Steps Behind, and unlike some acoustic songs, it doesn't feel like a different vibe from the songs around it on the album. It actually makes it a fantastic follow on song from Liquid Dust and U Rok Mi, which blend in a similar sound, by also using nylon string instruments in significant sections.
Unlike many typical ballads, this isn't so much about hope or longing "As love lies broken in two." Things are pretty bad, and the protagonist isn't optimistic.
Contrast that with Love Bites:
I don't want to touch you too much, baby 'Cause making love to you might drive me crazy
Or When Love and Hate Collide:
There's a time and a place and a reason And I know I got a love to believe in All I know got to win this time
In both Love Bites and WLAHC, there is still a relationship there and a reasonable level of hope and even optimism. GFGTT is almost resigned to things being over.
It's goodbye for good this time As love lies broken in two (ah-ah) I'd move heaven and earth this time To cross that wasteland with you
Then (in a pre-chorus?), there is acceptance of that. It's broken, the protagonist is moving on. And there is finally a glimmer of positivity in the last line, as he is ready to go out alone and start over. No tale of redemption, no "everything is better" ending, but an ending, without being a tragedy.
I'm walking into the storm Just as the night brings the dawn I am reborn
This is just such a great song, and really thoughtful lyrics. In contrast with some of the more fun songs on this album, this has the seriousness and sincerity of something like Love Bites, but with experience that comes with age written into it. One other line which I really love:
I've one last battle to fight
The protagonist just needs to pull away, sever ties, and it will be over. It is going to be heart-wrenching, but just one final push, one final battle, and he can move on.
At the moment, the music, the theme, the performance, the song-craft, makes it my favourite song on the album.

Great analysis...I enjoy reading stuff like this. While I have stated before that GFGTT is my least favorite on this album, that statement really does not do this song justice as the album has an incredible amount of depth. While ballads are typically the last type of Leppard song I gravitate towards I definitely recognize they are still usually excellent songs in their own right. I still listen to the album as a complete piece and have given all of the songs an equal chance as I've gotten to know it. Recently I have really started to "get" this one. When the string arrangement starts to kick in at the mid-point of the first verse, it really gives the song this epic/majestic type feel to it. The solo really calls back to RETRO ACTIVE with its flamenco style which I also really like. The "I am reborn" lyric is definitely powerful stuff after the message of the song is delivered (strong enough that they have it on the back of a shirt ). Their ballads in general have really run the gamut at this point. If you think about the pure elation lyrically in songs like BREATHE A SIGH and GOODBYE and compare them with the tonally quite dark GFGTT and ANGELS, it's really quite a contrast. Both ballads I think are also reflective of the album as a whole...while DSH of course has its share of light hearted Leppard material it also lyrically gets quite dark in spots, perhaps a bit more so than any other album (SLANG may be the exception). Thank you Sir. Yep, I think you are spot on with your comparisons to Retro and Slang. I think there is a depth and experimentation to some of the songs here that was on Slang (and previous albums), then to varying degrees went missing (IMO) until 2015. And is back now much more with this album. But when you add the element of darkness, which as you said, was there with Slang a lot, this album definitely shares a lot of Slang elements. I like GBFGTT and Angels, but they are dark and I have to be in the mood to go dark. I find Open Your Eyes and FHTE to be the really dark ones. There are times when Open Your Eyes kicks in, and I have to think if I am ready for it But then Gimme a Kiss That Rocks comes on after and all is good. I love Open Your Eyes though, definitely a favourite too. Angels was my least favourite initially, but it has grown on me too. I think wonder which song Joe was referring to when he seemed to indicate that he thought the band's best song was on this album. Got to be GGFGTT or Angels I think, but wonder which one....

Definitely agree with you about the depth and experimentation that you reference. For me, what sets this album apart from at least the last couple albums is just that depth. There just a lot of attention to detail here with plenty of little hooks here and there and just the way these songs were crafted. It's basically more in line with the level of detail that I think we always kind of took for granted with Def Leppard music until it wasn't there as much with the last couple releases. As for the ballads, I can appreciate the musicianship in them but I guess my tastes aren't that sophisticated lol. I just prefer the more fun, upbeat, catchy type of Leppard tunes so the ballads aren't working for me. I guess I feel like they just sap the energy away and the album is way better when I just skip This Guitar, GFGTT, Angels and Lifeless. If I can be honest, if I were making a list of my 20 least favorite Leppard "original" songs, those 4 songs would probably all be on it. There have been plenty of Leppard ballads I've loved over the years so it's not that I'm anti-ballads. I guess I just prefer more of the power ballad format and not piano/orchestrated and country sounding stuff. But, I absolutely love all the other songs on the album and still consider it their best for me since Adrenalize. I guess what's important here though is that there's something for all of our tastes here and it's awesome that we've gotten such a strong album of material at this stage in their career when we never really knew if we'd get another album. What's fascinating to me this time is that the dark lyrics actually go beyond just the 4 songs that we've all pegged as the dark ones on this album. The best example is on U ROK MI: "I think it's too late to save my soul Some kinda power is swallowing me whole" Such an ominous lyric smack dab in the middle of this super up beat song about inspiration on a ukulele. Maybe there's an interpretation of this one that I'm missing but I found it interesting. There are other examples as well on other songs. The lyrics in general have been the most thought provoking since SLANG for me which has made repeat listens more interesting for sure. Thank you Sir. Yep, I think you are spot on with your comparisons to Retro and Slang. I think there is a depth and experimentation to some of the songs here that was on Slang (and previous albums), then to varying degrees went missing (IMO) until 2015. And is back now much more with this album. But when you add the element of darkness, which as you said, was there with Slang a lot, this album definitely shares a lot of Slang elements. I like GBFGTT and Angels, but they are dark and I have to be in the mood to go dark. I find Open Your Eyes and FHTE to be the really dark ones. There are times when Open Your Eyes kicks in, and I have to think if I am ready for it But then Gimme a Kiss That Rocks comes on after and all is good. I love Open Your Eyes though, definitely a favourite too. Angels was my least favourite initially, but it has grown on me too. I think wonder which song Joe was referring to when he seemed to indicate that he thought the band's best song was on this album. Got to be GGFGTT or Angels I think, but wonder which one....

Ben just covered SOS EMERGENCY...been waiting for this one! Someone posted in the comments that his cover makes the song sound like it could've come off ADRENALIZE and I'm inclined to agree (or at least more retro sounding). The guitar parts he pulls out of the second verse into the second chorus in particular are just fantastic.
I think I've listened to this DSH cover of his the most so far...been listening to it off and on all day.

They’ve not given This Guitar a legitimate push, but they still could. If they do any others U Rok Mi should be a candidate, but Gimme a kiss is the clear choice.
