So Vivian is playing the outro solo on this now? Interesting. Isn't it also new that Viv is playing the outro solo on Women, other than the final note, which reverts to Phil?

Viv has been playing the outro solo on Women since 1999. Phil played both solos from 87-93, then since 99 Phil has played the first Vivian the second. But Phil still has the final note.

Great coverage CindyJWe usually make an annual trip to Dublin around Christmas time and this year was no exception. But as with 2015 we had the added bonus of being able take in a Def Leppard concert whilst we were here. I’m not really a fan so we didn’t watch Cheap Trick but the layout of the bars in the 3arena means you can stand there overlooking the standing section and hear the bands playing. They sounded decent and played the singles you’d expect to hear. We got to our seats for the start of Personal Jesus before the show begins. I noticed the screen images were different, promoting the new Best Of CD, rather than their beer which I don’t think was for sale anyway. As soon as the countdown hit ten seconds the atmosphere in the venue went up a notch. The Hysteria intro starts and then we’re off with Women. I do think that instead of the Leppard logo that they should have the Hysteria text logo on the screen instead, because I heard no end of people beforehand on the tram and in the venue talking about the set, and some weren’t even aware they were doing the album in full. Which beggars belief really when all the promo has said its Hysteria in its entirety. But it really just rams home with the intro plus the album logo up there that the Hysteria album is starting the show. The sound is absolutely perfect. They really have taken their FOH sound to another level. Women looks to have some new screen animation with it too. Women is all my all time favourite Lep song and it’s good to hear it again. The following 5 singles off side 1 get the place on its feet, especially Animal and PSSOM. The Steve tribute is poignant and long overdue, but as it’s Hysteria in full it’s very apt. I’m pleased they kept the ITR solo too. GOW also has new screen footage of old and new war images like its being presented on an old portable TV, just like they do on Rocket. I really like that touch. The real treats for me are on side 2 as I’ve never seen 4 of them in the flesh live. The first of which, Don’t Shoot Shotgun, sounded fantastic, one thing I noticed was how heavy the sound was, especially the guitars. Great stuff. Joe coped with Run Riot well too. Incidentally Run Riot also has new screen images, which looked to be from the mods v rockers trouble in the U.K. in the early 1960s, (again presented on an old portable TV). It was noticeable how the show atmosphere lulled a bit though with the first 3 songs of side 2, however it makes a refreshing change from the usual same old same old setlist, but you can see and feel that slight lull in energy. Hysteria brought the atmosphere back up again and this is still a highlight in the set with its montage of images and videos. It’s perfect. Of course the set is rounded off with Excitable and Love and affection. I have to say that some people from around me and behind me left during these last 2 songs, not just a few, it was double figures. Packed up and went. Was it because they had to be somewhere? Was it because side 2 has unfamiliar stuff on it? Did they even know it would be Hysteria in full? Very strange, it was only 10pm. The band come back for the 5 song encore and Action is the one in the rotating spot. Not my ideal choice as I’ve seen it so many times live. But it went down well. The final 4 songs took the roof off though, in particular Let’s Get Rocked before the now standard end of ROA and Photograph bring things to a close. Overall this was easily one of the best gigs I’ve seen by them. The main factor is because it’s the Hysteria album in full which is something they’ve never done here before. This is an event tour, it’s special to be able to celebrate Hysteria in this way. It’s also amazing to hear the album that changed my life being performed in its entirety. Another big factor was the band, they looked to be enjoying this, playing something different in a way they haven’t often done seemed to give them more energy. Joe mentions Hysteria was born in Dublin too, which for anyone who knows their history knows it’s where a lot of the writing and recording was done. Rewind to the last time I saw them on tour in 2015 and that was the worst run of shows I’ve ever seen from them, they looked to be going through the motions. This show was the polar opposite to that. In addition the sound in the venue was perfect where I was. Indeed I went with a friend who hasn’t seen the band since the Mirror Ball Tour, he’s more of a casual fan and he thought this show was miles better than the one he saw in 2011 in terms of how the band sounded and the performance they put in. He was really impressed by it all. This show is a real spectacle, something that should be documented, I know it was for Viva Hysteria but IMO the Hysteria album presented like this is a big event, big arenas, big crowds, big production and for me the band sound better now, mainly Joe of course. This really is a tour not to be missed and I can’t imagine it will be confined to just the U.K. For me this deserves its own world tour.

REVIEW – DEF LEPPARD/CHEAP TRICK 3ARENA DUBLIN, IRELAND 01/12/18 Posted on December 3, 2018 by OranThe list of great bands grows ever smaller, with the likes of Slayer, Twisted Sister, Black Sabbath and many others hanging up their guitar strings and saying goodbye to the millions of people that have been supporting and listening to their music for the last 20, 30, or 40 years. One band, however, that shows no signs of slowing down are UK rock legends, Def Leppard. Still delivering the goods after over 40 years on the go, they take to the 3 Arena in Dublin for another high octane performance. Cheap Trick are the openers to the event, and I was quite excited to see them because they’d been a bucket-list live act that has since eluded me. Armed with this sense of wonder at one of the most well-known bands that came from the USA, I was thrilled to finally see them. As all 5 members took to the stage, with trademark novel guitars in tow, Cheap Trick got stuck in. Frontman Robin Zander has a real “Alice Cooper” thing going on, complete with top-hat and spangled white jacket but it seems that he is sorely disinterested in doing anything other than walking around the stage, and at one time, leans on the speakers mid-song. Now, I do get that the man is no spring chicken, but he just doesn’t seem to want to be there. There was no real engagement with the crowd, and a golden opportunity to light the place up during “I Want You To Want Me” was missed as the band skipped the part of the song where only the drums play and Zander sings that would have had everyone’s gears greased. I’m sure there’s a reason for it, but it escapes me. Lead guitarist Rick Nielsen however, seems to be loving it, as he never stops smiling from one minute to the next. Sporting a perfectly square guitar, and at one point, a 5-neck axe, he is seriously involved. That’s the best part of the night so far – Nielsen is giving it socks and remembers that he still loves to do what he does. The final bow out of “Surrender” goes down a smash, but I see people shaking their heads at a lacklustre performance overall. 2/5 Def Leppard are no strangers to Irish shores with a long history of living, recording and gigging here, having in-fact been here only 3 years ago. Tonight, the band is bringing their infamous “Hysteria” album under their collective arms, and break it across our heads. Playing it in its entirety, “Hysteria” has been hailed as one of the greatest rock albums of all time, and is still selling to this day, despite coming out in the early 1980s. It has aged well, and still rocks the house whenever I hear “Pour Some Sugar On Me”, or “Animal”. Frontman Joe Elliott is his usual upbeat and gracious self, acknowledging the audience and generally being a dude onstage. Shredder Vivian Campbell is still the monster he always was and never stops moving. Drummer Rick Allen sports a very snazzy pair of glittery headphones that you can see from space. The perma-permed bassist Rick Savage bounces all over the stage and stands on the speakers for an eagle-eyed view of the audience for ‘Gods of War’. The lighting for the show is as always, absorbing and the sound is perfectly timed. This is a testament to how well the band works together, and it is obvious by watching them move together onstage. Guitarist Phil Collen does his usual thing of showing off the chest that is the envy of the gym-going workaholics that like their greasy food and occasional pint of plain (I include myself in that cohort). So “Hysteria” kicks off with ‘Women’, ‘Rocket’, and ‘Animal’ the atmosphere is electric here. Each person is banging the heads, dancing and pumping their fist in the air. Elliott works his magic with his bandmates, igniting the night for everyone’s enjoyment. The visuals pretty much stick to the image of an old TV with clips of Richard Nixon, Ziggy Stardust, the Apollo launch and a host of other 70’s era media coverage. There is a touching moment with a clip of original guitarist Stephen Clarke performing with Leppard back in the 80s (Clarke tragically died in 1991 in London from alcohol poisoning). The Leppard throw us 2 songs never before played in Dublin (‘Don’t Shoot Shotgun’ and ‘Excitable’), and the audience erupts in appreciation when Elliott makes the declarations that they weren’t played there before. As the night goes on, the hits keep coming, and the singalong ‘When Love & Hate Collide’ that goes hand-in-hand with ’Rock of Ages’ and ‘Photograph’. It’s a typical Def Leppard gig: the lads let the music do the talking, and it’s louder than any speech. As the night draws to a close, we are reminded “If you don’t forget us, we won’t forget you!” All 5 men take a bow front and centre on the end of the walkway protruding from the centre stage and bid us goodnight. This was another absolutely fantastic gig with nostalgia and good times throughout. The event is over by 11 pm – but in Dublin on a Saturday night, that’s only early. 4/5 Setlist: 01 – Women 02 – Rocket 03 – Animal 04 – Love Bites 05 – Pour Some Sugar On Me 06 – Armageddon It (Steve Clark Guitar Solo) 07 – Gods Of War 08 – Don’t Shoot Shotgun – (First time in Dublin) 09 – Run Riot 10 – Hysteria 11 – Excitable – (First time in Dublin) 12 – Love And Affection 13 – Action 14 – When Love & Hate Collide 15 – Let’s Get Rocked 16 – Rock Of Ages 17 – Photograph Source + photos

This is like an Advent Calendar of Def Leppard shirts! Awesome! Hey, maybe that should actually be a thing.
